In selection mode …which is selecting “ s” on the keyboard or depressing the arrow icon in the viewport tool bar.

press 3 to select edge mode ( RMB on the button to get a menu for selecting front / back face or both plus other options )

Select an edge > RMB over the edge , you will get a selection menu showing loops types and the short cut keys you can use.
