hey
looks like some neat new features in sp3, i really like the look of these:

gi/scattering in fog
fog emission
volumetric caustics

fastSSS2

mesh based lights

SSS looks great!! *hint**hint*
it would be interesting to see what the render times are on those volumetric caustics!

not dissing vray which is a cool piece of software, just mentioning that apart from SSS (yes, it's a glaring omission right now) and the light portals, all of the mentioned features have been available in Mantra's PBR since 9.5. And that includes caustics in and on volumes, volume participation in the global illumination solution and so on. It's just that noone at SESI has the time to document it all in such a nice format

hey

hmm didn't know about the volume caustics in mantra(any examples?), i know of some volume stuff that works with PBR, but yes maybe it would be good to have it presented(documented) better.

as for lightmesh, i know about some stuff that might be coming to houdini soon, but i wasn't aware of anything in 9.5.

and yes plse, just look at that SSS, it just looks great

Won't overcranking a surface shader to be really bright essentially give you a lightmesh in PBR?

hi
i did some tests a while back using super bright constants, it seems to work ok, but the amount of noise it generates is insane.

i think i pushed the samples up to like 90x90 and it still wasn't a usable image, and this was just a grid and a torus.
lets see what h10 has to offer…

this has improved alot even in 9.5 and is bound to get yet better. For the last two projects I didn't use any lights at all, only emitting geometry.
