Hey
I'm trying to find out how to get my toon to pick something up and react to it with out keyframing it into place. Kinda like the sword in the Paper Cut video in the Top Ten Count Down.

This kind of thing is usually called a “constraint” in most 3d software or “parenting” depending of the way the object hierarchy is setup.
You should check out for “parenting” in the help.
I'm not an expert in that matter yet in houdini, but I think one solution would be to simply connect your “sword” node under the hand node of the character. else you could use a “blend” node or a “fetch” node I guess.
Good luck!

In the Animation Shelf there is the Dynamic Parent tool.
Select your sword and press Dynamic Parent tool.
You now get a bunch of button options along the top of the viewport.
Select the object you want to parent the sword to. On the toon character the rotation controller (sphere icon) is parented to the position controller (box icon) so you will want to select the sphere rotation controller icon and then you can move the hand after that point in the time line and the sphere will go with the hand.
At a later time you can release the sword by using the Dynamic Parent tool or parent it to another object like the other hand.
It supports time blends as well.
What it is doing is placing Blend Objects with the correct house keeping nodes so you can always inspect and work directly with the nodes.

There's at least one school like the old school!
