I've come across this expression recently:

../..:smoke/density

what does the …: stand for?

It basically just means the DOP simulation up 2 levels. It could also be written as ../../

It's also quite handy to visualize a DOP path like that with the details view.

Here's a quick example from the docs that fetches a volume from DOPS using an Object Merge SOP.
