I have a simple curve SOP, and was pleasantly surprised to learn that it renders in mantra without converting it to a tube or other. But where do I control its thickness?

Curve rendering thickness is controlled by a point attribute called width. If you append an Attribute Create SOP to your network and create a point attribute of that name you can control the thickness when it renders with that value. By default curves render with a width of 0.1.
