I have several objects - flowers - in real world scales, 1m=1unit. So the petals of these flowers are can be less than 0.01 units. Here the sculpt and paint SOPs don't ever intersect geometry at all - I have to scale to whole lot up to perform my edits and then down again after…
It this an internal ray-bias issue?

yeah, thats what I thought too - LOTS of things are much smaller; like micropolygons. Thats why they're called “micro”.
