Error when trying to create flat tank

Hi. I'm very new to Houdini (opened it first time yesterday) so forgive my ultra-noob questions.

1.I can't seem to be able to create a flat tank, or any water tank if I have models imported from Maya in the scene. An error comes up: ‘NoneType’ object is not iterable (see attachment). I'm not sure what that means or how to fix it. I tried importing various different models, restarted Houdini etc. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

2.On the other hand, if I export a scene from 3ds max in alembic format, and make it interact with water in Houdini, the object disappears next time I reopen the file. It's simply not there, except for some locators in its place. Nodes for it seem to still be there, but the object is nowhere to be found. Anyone able to help with this? Am I missing something really obvious?

I would greatly appreciate any help.
