So, using the Dopesheet, and using Nested groups don't seem to play nicely together. I want to use One Line per Group mode in the Dopesheet, but I cannot deselect the child groups so that I only see lines for the Parent group. How do I do this? Otherwise, I get many lines per group, which kind of defeats the purpose of One Line per Group mode, no?

Yeah, you can't. You need to create separate groups for that.
