Maybe I am just getting too old but I am unable to install my indie license For Houdini 16.5. I type hkey and it brings up a dos like window and shows me my licenses, both the apprentice and the indie. I select the indie so it is highlighted and I click “OK” but nothing happens. the little window remains. It will only close when I click the “X” on the upper right of the window.

So I open Houdini again and it does not show the software being licensed.

Can someone slow-walk me through this process?

Yup! The lovely folks at support@sidefx.com can help get you going. They've had a lot of practice at it for the last 3 days.

when did you pick to have your license set to activate? you won't get your license until that date.

I wrote to support and they got me straightened out. I had to go to the programs folder and into the bin and open with hindie.exe. That worked. So I made that my shortcut instead of the one that the installation set to my desktop.
