hello folks

I am trying Houdini Apprentice on Ubuntu 5.10 (breezy) running in a P4 laptop with ATI mobility Radeon 9600.

Ubuntu supports ATI graphics, but the performance wasn't satisfatory. Well beyond the winXP performance using ATI 7.95 drivers ( originally was 7.97 but houdini open gl redraw was unusable ).

so, I found this thread about installing ATI fglrx drivers on ubuntu:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=78466&highlight=fglrx [ubuntuforums.org]

now Houdini open gl redraw is way faster than on winxp

hope it helps some

bests

It looks like you've just installed a FireGL driver for your 9600, which is the professional version of the driver for FireGL cards. I'm a little surprised that it worked; usually it'll scoff at you for not having a FireGL card.

Of course, all the FireGL cards are now based on ATI's consumer 9x00 chips, so there's no technical reason why it shouldn't work - just the sales reason
