The exact same parameters, massively different results - why?

On the left is my attempt at copying the tutorial shown on the right - they have the same parameters, but mine is not working. Why?

Hard to judge from the screenshot, but it could be that the overall scale of your object is far larger than that of the tutorial. Or perhaps your particle visualization scale is too low.
