holes in mountain with heightfields tools?

Is it possible to create holes in the landscape using the terrain tools in H17?
I am not taking of deep caves, but rather simple holes as the image.
or is it a limitation of how heightfields work?
Granted is not a big limitation, but I thought I saw once a tutorial on how to tackle this particular issue.

heightfields encode just height
so having something you can't represent as heightmap is also not possible to represent as a heightfield

you can always convert heightfields to volumes and go from there, but at that point they'll stop being heightfields

Ok, thanks. That's what I thought. I was just wondering how far could I get with the terrain tools on that direction. I really like how they work from low res to full res.
