Sounds a bit like Viewport OCL on steroids. Hopefully good enough to actually render out some elements with.

I think everyone is pushing for realtime semi-biased rendering. Unreal Engine, Blender EEVEE, the upcoming Redshift RT, now Solaris!

is the video available anywhere?

Patience…Siggraph doesn't even happen for another two weeks!

I my view it's impressiv what SESI can do in there development department. It looks like we have 2 big releases this year and a lot of new tools in the same software. Soon houdini is a full cg / film tool that has all department tools in it. Just crazy.

I am curious about this USD technology. Is it purely for the purpose of visualizing large scale and heavy scenes in the viewport (and renderer) where before we had to do all sort of proxy tricks… or can it completely replace the OpenGL viewport?

That is, can it be used for live geometry creation sessions as well ?

Karma render… maybe the new render technology to be previewed along Solaris?

Well, Mantra has been evolving and being modernized at a steady rate AFAIK. I think the only common complaint about it it's not that is lacking functionality but its suboptimal speed. And maybe that lack of performance is causes by its flexibility, which is one of its great features…. But I think it's true, a great part of new use case for Houdini such as mograph (and freelancers in general) would happily sacrifice part of that flexibility for speed.

Since RenderMan is mostly C++ now, mantra is the most flexible renderer available… I would hate for that to change.

I don't see H sacrificing quality for the high end users. If anything, they've made a highly technical solution that's also accessible for more ‘generic’ people (like myself )

Any updated info from attendees?

I am checking twitter each 5 min and no news about it.

Haha I have to recognize I'm also curious about today presentation, Solaris/LookDev improvements could potentially be lots more revelant for my workflow than the 17.5/TOPs release features, so checking Twitter every once in a while but yeah, no news yet
