How do you render a holdout object on a smoke simulation?

Could anyone help me with a scene. I have two smoke/dust simulations, one on the floor and one on a window seal. I have a robotic crawler coming through the window and onto the floor. How do you make a holdout of the crawler into the smoke? Do you have to put everything inside the dop network or can they be separate?[
