So me and my brother both have houdini indie off of steam and have successfully gotten the engine plugin working.
One thing that still poses an issue however is that we cant edit eachother's HDA's in editor.

Does the engine plugin require having the source files at hand?
We have dropbox setup for our source file versioning and are working with our own p4v server for the ue4 project.
The only thing is that we have them on different drive paths Mine being F his being D.
Both our Houdini Indie install locations are on C.
