Fur guides that look like NURBs curves?

Hi,

I am trying to figure out what kind of voodoo is going on with the fur groom node. If I look at a single guide (curve) inside the node, it appears to be a NURBs curve, with the points lying off the curve and isoparms connecting them. Info shows them to be polygons, but they sure don't look like polys.

If I then object merge this into a new vanilla object, they appear to be poly curves again.

What is going on?

Reason this is an issue is that we are trying to push some hair that is intersecting the deform object out the object using an SDF, but because the points don't lie on the curve, some curves are still captured and don't fly free.
