Shell not opening on Linux

I'm trying to open the shell on Linux (Ubuntu 20.04.4) using windows->shell in Houdini Indie 19.0.589. But when I click 'shell', nothing opens. What I'm trying to achieve is installing some Python libraries. Alternatively, would it be possible to configure Houdini to use my own Python interpreter?

On linux you can use your own terminal, although it is convenient to get a shell with all the right environment variables already set. The built-in shell only works if you have xterm installed.

I think you can get houdini to use a different python interpreter, but you'll have to read the docs on how to do that.
