Hello! In 3ds Max and CINEMA 4D has a large library of built-in materials and commercial. Example in the picture. Why Houdini FX is no such a large library? This is useful when creating quick sketches of scenes.

IMO Although it would be use full have a library a true artist enjoys crafting the world around themselves, instead of using someone else's creations.

Orbolt does have a variety of prebuilt shaders if you prefer too:

Of course 3D Max material gallery or Maya (like V-Ray/Max Well materials) are really perfect , Houdini doesn't has exactly same thing.

But the interesting feature of Houdini's materials is they are open and you can dive inside to them and change it's network to create new material with different features , you don't need to know C++ programming or Shader Programming .

You should just use Houdini shader language (VEX) , it's so simpler than other languages.

Houdini has some little material gallery too , they made by Houdini users , Unfortunately I can't remember it's link , But I saw that in the Houdini forum , (Just search it).

Also you can find some different material on www.Orbolt.com library. (e.g http://www.orbolt.com/asset/_danylyon::PBR_layered_material [orbolt.com] )

Thank you. On orbolt.com very small library. Yes, you can create the material itself, but still a waste of time … And yet, and I do not understand why such a beautiful program as Houdini FX, there is no such built-in library … I hope that's the plan planned?

Out of interest why is creating your own materials a ‘waste of time’?

Sorry.. Translator incorrectly translated) It takes some time… When creating a sketch of the scene, it is difficult to immediately determine the material, and a built-in library of materials, such as 500 pieces.. very well have helped…
There are about 500 standard materials, which sooner or later create all users. 1000 users it will spend roughly about 85,000 hours! It is 9 years of life !!! Separated by 1,000 users … And more … And users only need to have someone from Side Effects Software, spent about 1 month and it would have saved many, many years of life to other users of the program!

the same, but without translation:
Существует примерно 500 стандартных материалов, которые рано или поздно создают все пользователи. 1000 пользователей на это потратит примерно около 85000 часов! Это 9 лет жизни!!! Разделенных на 1000 пользователей… А пользователей больше… А нужно только чтоб кто-то из Side Effects Software, потратил примерно 1 месяц, и это сэкономило бы много-много лет жизни другим пользователям программы!

Yes , Houdini doesn't have some of predefined useful tools like other softwares , somethings like Material Gallery.
But Houdini give you all of the requirements stuffs that you need for making them and say : Make it Your Self !
and this is power of the Houdini !!!

Other 3D softwares give you a complete Building , so it's easy and very fast for using in the projects , But Houdini give you Bricks !
It's more complex and harder than others , but in this case you can build anything (tower , road , bridges , palace and … ) , you can create exactly something that you want !
Or you can create a Procedural Tool for creating Building and use it in too many projects very faster than another softwares

Yes. Houdini FX offers many possibilities! But the materials are approximately the same in all programs at the same PRINCIPLE. Earlier in 3d Max was also very little material, but they made a lot of them … and it's nice))) yes, it is a trifle, but nice just a detail)

the same, but without translation:
Да. Houdini FX дает огромные возможности! Но материалы создаются примерно одинакова во всех программах, по одним и тем же принцыпам. Раньше в 3d Мах было то же очень мало материалов, но они сделали их много… и это приятно))) да это мелочь, но приятная же мелочь)
