Hi there,

i am testing Houdini Apprentice. I try to import some geometries, but no matter what format (obj, ply, etc.) i try to import, the File node says “Unable to read file….”.

I tested it with many different formats. Converted formats using Blender and Meshlab. I tested 2 different installations on 2 different machines and OS's (Windows and OSX). Same problem.

Am I just missing something. I am going slightly mad.

Hi Jens,

Can you share one of the files you are trying to import if possible please ? I would like to see if can import it or not. If I can import it then chances are you are doing something wrong about importing, if not then the chances are that the file may be corrupt.

Can you try to uncheck the ‘Show sequences as one entry’ option on the file import dialog that pops up.

It's even worse. When i uncheck “Show sequences as one entry” option, the file can be read, but it is modified such that it has 0 faces, vertices, etc. After having opened it in Houdini, it is broken. Before, it is fine.

Edit: Okay, i cannot reproduce this behaviour. It happened for 2 files i tested. But did not happen anymore since then.

This is what I am doing:

1) File -> Import -> Geometry
2) Select File from Desktop directory

Am I missing something?

I am using H13.0.547

If you're using OsX Yosemite try launching Houdini from the ‘Houdini Shell.terminal’ in the Utilities folder.

just type ‘houdini’ and press enter.

Both importing from file menu or dropping in a geometry node and reading the file from within works for me. I suspect you may have disk permission issues. Try putting the file to a different location on drive and importing from there.

It works. But only in Houdini FX. I accidentially started Houdini. Where is the difference?
