I updated my Nvidia gfx drivers to latest production version. my system is a lenovo y580 with 660M GTX gfx card. it should be able to run houdini without issues (performance wise).

Note that I've started gplay.exe and successfully viewed several .bgeo files so OGL is unlikely the cause of my issues.

While searching for a solution online, I've noted that having VStudio installed might be an issue… my system has VS2008 & 2013 installed. I used dependency walker and can confirm that MSVCR90 is not listed as something that's trying to load (it only complains about IESHIMS.dll, which may be a Qt related problem).

pretty much at a loss as to what to try to get it to launch.

I am a senior dev (and former VFX Pipeline developer/architect) so I should understand any dramatic diagnostic you want me to perform, if you have an idea.

Thanks in advance for any help!

reply to myself….

this is quite strange, but In desperation, I tried starting houdini.exe from a dos prompt and it worked… after 2hours of screwing around trying to find a solution…

and now it all works normally (launched from the desktop).

I'm just glad its now launching. I hope this post can help someone else with similar problem.
