Capture Simulations to Lo-Res geo ?

Is there a way to capture simulations lo-res geo and maintain point numbers and order ? see the posted image as a example.

Allright so waves are easy, but what about something like this type of splash ? where droplets split of etc ? is there some way of analyzing the whole sequence and generate blendshapes, vertexanimation etc ? so I could have something like this and it does not change topology ?
