Hi there,

Just wondering if it would be possible within Houdini to bake lighting into vertex colours?

Thanks,

Hi all,

Still trying to figure out if this is possible. I found i similar post and they suggested using the Bake Vex SOP but I actually can't find any info on this on the Houdini docs… Has anyone had any experience with it?

Thanks

if you do not mind doing a render via a rop node set to do a UV render, then reloading the resulting texture to vertex colors, you can do it that way as well (render your diffuse pass with a mantra ROP node, then import back in using an attribute from map SOP).

alternatively depending on how detailed you want your lighting pass, you could also do a standard dot(N,L) on an attribWrangle to do a poor man's lighting pass on the points

I do recall seeing the vex bake sop a while back but have not tried it in a while… I am a bit intrigued now that you mention it

I couldn't find it :?
I am totally new to Houdini so it's probably right under my nose somewhere.

The idea of rendering out a temp texture and reloading that into the verts sounds like it could work. I'll have a go at that and see what I come up with.

Thanks

I haven't got it working, but there's hope!
Looks like the feature will be out in a later version (nice if it's before H16)
Check this thread - https://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_forum&Itemid=172&page=viewtopic&t=42184 [sidefx.com]
They actually mention this as a new feature in 14.
