Blocky Shadows

Total newbie question. This is a vanilla setup with a standard mantrasurface on a sphere, and a point light. Why is it that the shadow edge is very smooth in parts and totally blocky in others? I know I can subdivide heavily to force the blockiness to disappear, but it seems like I may be not understanding something else that's very basic.

Thank you.

Under the shading tab set your ray bias to something like 0.1 .

I wish there were no need for this. Would be great if Mantra would do a scene size evaluation on the fly. Or something.

Ray Bias is based on scene scale as a rule large scene = large bias , small scene scale small bias. ie largest bound value of the scene x 0.001 . Once you know. Once set in your mantra rop you can forget it , depending on what your doing ………
