      Just do it! You won't regret it. Get your feet wet with modeling in the Apprentice version, and you'll be shocked at what's possible. Once you create a small network of instructions, it's easy to re-use those instructions on other input geometry.

      $199 Expensive? Compared to what? That leaves plenty of change to pick up Redshift while you're at it if Mantra is beyond your requirements.

            anyway Redshift quality is very high, even comparated to mantra. By far the best GPU renderer.

      I can see where rthriller is coming from. I was a hardcore Maya user for years. But after giving myself small, digestable projects in Houdini, I learned the modeling tools and how to use basic VEX wrangles. Now i'm doing most of my modeling in Houdini, simply because the UI and speed is far beyond Maya. Now I'm learning how to build crowds from scratch, something that would have cost THOUSANDS of dollars via a Maya PLUGIN. I thought the whole "knowledge is power" line was BS, but's true, haha.

      $199 is a small price to pay for Indie version, and is perfect for most freelancers. Also, take a look into the Game Development Tools on Github. It does things Maya can't even do with paid plugins.

    The price is great, and with redshift it works brilliantly. I can't wait until renderman's xpu system as well, which should put the heat on redshift. Houdini supports all their shaders natively. Same price as redshift.

      anyone using more than 2 gpus in redshift using PCI risers? it's stable on linux?? Because i tested on windows with 6 gpus and is very very unstable.

      I can probably only say this because I'm on a 16 core system, but give Arnold a try. Its Render Settings are extremely simple, and it's stable as f*ck if you're able to do CPU rendering. It's also PBR based and works well with Substance Painter texture outputs.

    I guess no one is around the office today because of Siggraph. We'll probably only see 16.5 tomorrow? Looking forward to it.
