I don't seem to find how mantra surface references UDIM texture maps, as I saw UV layout has support for UDIM I am imagining there will be support across the board??

At this point the UV Layout SOP is the extent of the out-of-the-box support. It's definitely on the radar, but as always I can't speak to timelines. Let the “+1”s begin…

Thanks Werner, nice tutorial. The eternal Houdini “curse” - of course you can do it in Houdini, you just have to build it yourself

I found an example from martinkindl83 that seems to work quite nicely, in two forms actually and although on the way found out also a bug in H14 the solution seems really nice.

Use it in H13 and convert the expression on the Attribute Create SOP to its simpler one line form and it will work fine.


This should clearly be a priority, UDIMs are everywhere nowadays and having to put so much effort into something that should be pretty much automatic kills the flow.

Great news! In latest build 14.0.328 in “Texture VOP” node added support of UDIM. You need to check “UDIM Filename Expansion”.
Than if you have UDIM textures like “pic.1001.tif” in filename need to enter “pic.%(UDIM)d.tif”.

unfortunately there is still bug in prebuild mantra shader, that i was experiencing with my own udim supported shader.

On bump and displacement with UDIMs on is asking for non existing UDIMS and generates huge amount of IO operations.

Im trying to localize the node that needs to be fixed, but no luck so far.


If building custom shader it works fine - as the previous udim support i did build.

if someone wants to know how to fix it (bump asking for non existing textures), let me know.

for now i did list it as bug and lets see if they will fix it.
