Ok thanks but what's the replacement tool?
Well, I am usually using Edge Loop. Or PolyDraw tools in case I need edge loops in the middle.

Thanks. I didn't know edge loop was a replacement for Edge Divide.
As for PolyDraw, this seems to be used only for retopo, if I understood correctly...

No, PolyDraw is like a knife on steroids, but also a multi-purpose tool. TopoBuild is used for retopology. I often use PolyDraw when modeling. The only thing to notice is that it will freeze your upstream and you'll not be able to change anything.

Ok I watched some Polydraw videos. Amazing! Finally Hou got some proper modelling tools. It works almost like in XSI...

Another question : is there a similar tool than edge loop, but only for selected edges?

Well imagine I need to add a perpendicular edge that runs on 3 parallel edges only. I want to choose where the subdivision will be. So I drag the mouse from left to right, viewing a preview of where the new edges will be.
It's just like adding edge using the Edge Loop button, but without adding it on a full ring of edges, just 3 of them.

I If I am getting you correct, you could use the PolySplit tool in case you just want to add normal cut edges perpendicularly.
Simply activate the PolySplit tool and click Right Mouse Button in the viewport and enalbe Snap to Perpendicular feature.

And you can also add snap divisions from the toolbar on top...snapping can also be enabled with MMB and to add more divisions just use scroll wheel.

Hey Slgor, thanks for the help. However with Polysplit I have to click on each perpendicular edge. I'd like to select edges, drag the mouse for the location of the new perpendicular edges, then click ONCE.
See you

Do you have any kind of video as an example from other DCCs? Mayne Knife tool with snapping enabled could help?

Unfortunately, no such tool exists to my knowledge but there are some workarounds you could do.

Wow thanks for the long informative video! I'll try to follow it tomorrow just like a tutorial.
You should put it on a video site such as Vimeo and name it "some Hou modelling tips".
Also I like the relaxing music in the background!
So, I'll tell you more about it tomorrow but from what I saw your advices are very good.

Hehe, thank you. I am glad you liked it. I am actually preparing a lot of videos which will cover direct modeling in Houdini. But I am waiting for H19 as I don’t see a point of record with soon old version. Until then, feel free to ask me anything you want regarding modeling tools. As you could see even for the video I recorder with a bit more effort as I am basically practicing and testing so that videos are nice to watch. So I am really glad you liked the music.

Maybe I should create separate topic just for modelling questions?

Hello,

@SIgor420, Thank you for the video, just a note about knife tool that is good but generate unshared edges on primitive border selection.
cf. quik gif to simple workaround

@Grendizer, As I also come from softimage I also remember frustation about edge divide tool !
Feel free to submit RFE is needed.

I have noticed that too, you could also see that in the video when I am trying to make a polySplit cut. I will report this as its really not good behavior and I am usually agains workarounds, especially if they could be easily avoided.

YES ! For info I also log a RFE/Bug about this last year (RFE #103649). Perhaps more input explanations from others users can help ?

Hey Igor and Julca. Thanks for the very informative video and GIF! I watched everything. These solutions are good but nowhere as fast as XSI's tools. However, I will use them.

So I think the best is for SideFX to modify the Edge Loop tool just a bit.
- If no edge is selected prior to clicking the "Edge Loop" button, it would behave just as today.
- If some edges are selected prior to clicking the "Edge Loop" button, it would subdivide just the selected edges.

So I think I'll send an RFE.
Thanks!!
David

EDIT : RFE sent. But before posting a RFE, it would be nice to check previous RFE's. Is there a way to do that?

Hey Igor! Thanks for this new video. I didn't know about this trick : keep the "S" key pressed, and when you release it, the same function is called again. Very handy!
Unfortunately the Edge Divide tool is not a real answer to my problem as you cannot choose the new edges location. I think Sidefx needs to add this possibility.
Cheers
