Thanks Mark! That worked once I changed the source type to Primvar.
Appreciate the quick help.

Hi all,
I'm having a difficult time figuring out what I'm doing wrong when I try to render UV passes in Karma. It's giving me a pattern for every face instead of the object. Any help would be appreciated!

Nevermind... found it! I wasn't using a Render Geometry Settings and toggling on the portal settings.

Hi there,
I'm attempting to setup a portal light in Solaris, but I'm having difficulty figuring out what I'm doing wrong. I configured the portal geometry to be set at "PortalLight." I then dropped the prim into the "Portals" field in the dome light. Is there another step that I'm missing? Attached is the test file.
I tried searching for documentation and tutorials, but I haven't been able to track anything down yet.
Thank you

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Rotation around velocity axis with POP Torque

Hey guys,
I'm hitting a mental road block trying to understand how to rotate a particle around its velocity axis with a POP Torque DOP. In the attached file I've set a force and defined an orient attribute with Z aligned to its velocity. On the POP Torque there's an option labeled “Axis Relative to Particle's Orientation.” The description of this option says, “The provided goal axis will be rotated into the particle's own reference frame. Thus a value of (0,1,0) will be up in the space of the particle rather than in world space.”
I figured enabeling this option would allow me to set the Axis parameter on POP Torque and it would look at the incoming orient attribute before determining the final rotation axis. However, when I feed in an orient attribute it doesn't even rotate at all.
In the file I've also included a separate setup (to the right) showing what I'm hoping to achieve with the POP Torque node.
Any insight would be appreciated!

Looks like smoothing out the velocities did the trick! Thanks Brian for posting your scene file. I modified it by throwing the time shift into a loop. And thanks Enivob for the heads up about the bank angle clamping issue. I updated that as well.

Technical Discussion » Particle banking rotation

Hi all,
I'm having a difficult time adding smooth banking rotation to particles. From the older threads that I looked at like this one [www.sidefx.com], it seems the popular recommendation is smoothing in CHOP's, however I'm trying to avoid this route because my understanding is CHOP's isn't multi-threaded and doesn't scale well.
Attached is the test file that I've been working on. I have the bank angle set to the magnitude of the XZ acceleration. Is there an operator or VEX expression that will smooth an attribute over time? Any help or hints would be greatly appreciated.

The best resource that I've found on Houdini volumes is Steven Knipping's training on CG Circuit [www.cgcircuit.com].

To further in this vary topic, I would like to know “how” to watch and learn from video tutorial. Everyone has own studying style, but I just don't know how to do it efficiently in my own case. I find myself going back and forth and still not getting them all in my head. Did you all have to watch a couple of times to really get them too? Do you still need to go back to tutorials when working on your own as well?
When I'm watching tutorials, I usually jot down notes of important points that I want to remember. I also open up Houdini and follow the steps myself as I'm watching the tutorial, then I save the files. If the tutorial is teaching a concept that you really want to cement into your head, every once and a while you can quickly scan through your notes or files as a refresher. It's a lot faster to quickly scan through some notes instead of watching the whole tutorial over again.

I have been through basics and learned the philosophy of certain setups but the more advanced videos I watch the more I feel lost. Sometimes instructors would go back to add this and then go further back to hack that and I get confused big time. I also wonder, when working on my own, should I apply the same steps instructor teaches or I should layout all first and work along the way?
You have options when you come across something that doesn't make sense. You can pause the tutorial and work backwards, researching the topic until you figure out what's going on. Another option is accept the fact that you might not understand everything 100% and make a note to go back to it later. There's still value in seeing how the whole puzzle comes together from a big-picture perspective, even if there are still individual puzzle pieces that aren't crystal clear. Just be sure you're pacing yourself when you are learning. Try to recognize if the tutorial you're watching is too advanced for your level. If you don't go through the process of building a strong foundation you're only asking for trouble.
Technical Discussion » How to stop console from appearing when changing font

Hi there,
I'm brand new to Houdini and I've been attempting to learn the software. For some reason whenever I try to change the font in a Font node, the Houdini Console alert box appears (see attached). Is this normal? If not, how would I go about fixing it?
I'm using Houdini Indie 15.5.632 on Windows 10.
Thanks!
