Hi.

I am planning on teaching a few layout things in Solaris on Monday. I have made an object with variants of a blue box and a redish sphere.

I am trying to scatter them using the: layout LOP, Copy to points LOP and the Instancer LOP. Just to show three ways to work on layout.

I know I am really close, but I am not able to get the explore instance to randomly switch between the two shapes correctly on any of the three examples. Has anyone go this to work? I have been Googling and found some answers but not all. Thanks in advance!

Hi.

Im in Windows 19.5.403 I have used the component builder to set up a bunch of random rocks, and rock colors. Expole variants works fine to see what I have done. But when I follow Chris Rydalch's Solaris (creating usd assets with component builder) workshop video around 43 mins in. He seems to be able to use the instancer to randomly select the variants. I get errors about the stage note being flattened. I have saved out the rocks as usd and tried asset referencing them back in and it still does not work. Has anyone had any success with this. I can see the expore variants LOP has changed since this example in the video. I dont get what I am doing wrong.

Hi Goldleft.

Im just going though your file you sent me. In it you said regarding abc imports with double transforms

"If you block the xformOps on the meshShape, after referencing the abc animation, then the eyes are no longer offset ('block_xformOps_on_shapes')".

On the Reference LOP
Is turning Parent Primitive Type to "None", rather than the default "Xform" what you are refering to?

Hi. Here is a screenshot from within my HDA. For creating a single frame usd export. I am using the "flush data" option. The attribute delete is doing just what you said. Removing N, and UV. Best. Mark

The way I am doing this is though a sop modify lop. And exporting out the first frame with added prim Vars such as rest etc, then further down killing the normal and uv data, then exporting the next part out as the anim file. The two resulting usd files can be sublayerd together. I am saving a ton of space this way. Best. Mark

Hi again Goldleft. Thanks again. I have just looked at the file you sent. I noticed you have also fixed the eye issue (thats for that). They eyes were parent constrained in Maya rather than skinned. I just had not figured out why the eyes were behaving oddly before. I got two answers for the price of one question!

So the issue with layering the animation latter is you have to manually reconstruct the stage hierarchy just for the animation. The component geometry creatures a structure like ASSET/geo etc. This is a very manual process leaving room for human error.

My other issue is I cannot even get an external abc/usd file that is animated to load into component geometry at all, let alone worry about breaking open the output part of it.

It is such a shame as it means I cannot use any of these tools. What I have done is make my own that suck in static or animated ABC/USD files with the option to either create stitch files and/or create a model and animation sublayered file. This does mean that none of your layout LOP are usable however. Which is another shame.

I can see the MaterialVariation LOP has VEX in it so it is CPU only for Karma. Is there an alternative planned at some point so we can have something similar on XPU ?
