Technical Discussion » Making irregular radio-centric wave pattern with Attribute Wrangle

Hello everyone!
I am trying to make a digital asset which can generate a realistic wood grain texture.
For this, my first step was to make a irregular wave pattern which I can control with some parameters.
I thought I made it with the following codes:
f@leng = length(@P);
f@ang = acos(@P);
int seed = ch("seed");
f@deform = 1 + sin(@ang) * noise(@ang * seed);
@Cd = cos(@deform * @leng * $PI * chf("frequency"));
Then I found that my wave pattern is irregular but not perfectly irregular as they are symetrical to x axis.
I don't know what I did wrong.
Can anyone help me?

I have problem installing Renderman 24.3 on Houdini 19.0.455.
I tried both python2 and python3 versions and they both did not work.
I copied and pasted .json file as instructed by Renderman Installation Guide.
Anyone has a solution for this?
I have following error messages:

I've got the same issue, except I don't want to bake in the lighting. I want to render the point color to a texture file or a constant shaded texture to a file.
I have UVs and it renders white with point or vertex colors and with or without a constant shader.
Is there a way to bake a texture without lighting?
This answer took me forever to find so hopefully this helps somebody else.

This tutorial is really good except for one thing. Under "Output Picture 1" you have to output it as a .rat file. I was trying to do it a .jpg. This is what is in the picture, but the tutorial didn't state it explicitly so I didn't realize it was important. Further down you can choose which file you want the final out put to be under "Extract Format".
Before I did this all I was getting was a blown out white UV map. Afterwards I was able to export both tif and jpg formats.
One other useful deviation from that tutorial is that you can drop a Ropnet directly into your geometry rather than go to the output tab with I found useful for having multiple different outputs in a single file.
I encountered similar problem which I did not have before.
I tried to solve it without success.

JSMACK, thank you for your continued follow-up!
I'm using renderman 23.5 with Houdini 18.5.351 which Pixar posted as the most recent version of Houdini supposed to work with renderman 23.5.
It now works without .json file but soon crashes... very unstable. I decided to stay with 3Delight until more stable version will be released.

I gave up with renderman!
Every time I tried test render with ris or rib, Houdini crashed and kicked me out!
Maybe I have done something wrong or Pixar and/or SideFX didn't do their homework properly.

Thank you JSMACK for your reply!
After a long and tiresome web search I solved the problem (not entirely though ).
I uninstall Houdini 18.5.351 (which happened to be Python 3 version) and reinstalled Houdini 18.5.351 (non Python version).
Now I have to handle another problem.
Here is what it look like Houdini launched with 4096 X 2160 monitor resolution at general UI scale 1 which I rarely use because the icons and menus become too small and barely readable but the renderman preset material palette looks normal.
The problem arises when I change general UI scale from 1 to 2, which is my usual preference setting, renderman material preset palette becomes weird.
It is jammed with separator which seems to become larger by 2 times and the content windows shrink so much.
Is this a bug or did I do something wrong? Is there any trick to solve this problem?
By the way, where can I find json file and how to verify if that is good?

Anyone can help me to solve the problem?
I changed the environment variables and it still does not work.

I have problem with procedurally textured materials.
In the same object, can I have different orientation of materials? (e.g. with same wood material vein aligned to X axis on one geometry and Z axis on another geometry)
In the attached image, the image on the left side and the other image on the bottom are two different object while the one on the upper side and the other on the bottom are the two geometries in the same object.
I would like the vein direction of the wood material follow the orientation of the geometry while I make rotation.
Is there a way to do so? I tried many different ways but could not make it. I even duplicated the materials and change the orientation, then assigned it to the geometry but it still did not work.
Thank you for your help!

Thanks for the feedback.
I meant, if i keep trying to select all prims and type enter several times then it crashes.

Another technical problem of Houdini 16 I encountered…
I began to suspect if there is some problem with my hardware…
Render Region window does not match with viewport. It is off as shown on the attached image.
I am working on

build 16.0.633
Lenovo Thinkstation P500
Intel Xeon E5-1630V3 @3.7GHz
nVidia Quadro M4000

Houdini 16, I encountered a funny problem with UV Flatten node.
I created a polymesh sphere and dropped down UV Flatten node, tried to select the primitive group, by clicking arrow on the right side of group field:
- if I select part of the prims of the sphere, it works. I can see number of prims in the group field; but
- if I select all the prims, then nothing appears in the group field; and
- If I insist, “BOOM” “Fatal Error!”
