I wish SideFX would reconsider this scheme. Finally owning and loving my Indie license, it honestly feels like the last ball and chain of the package.
I had to totally reinstall my Windows 10 due to the fact for some reason my Black Magic Fusion Studio and Resolve 15 simply wouldn't open any longer; splash screen and then nothing…
Everything is working fine now that I reinstalled, and I'm slowly reinstalling all my other graphics wares, but I was afraid to install Houdini 16 because
1) I still have an active license sitting on my other, now unused SSD w/broken Win 10 on it,
2) I wasted one being new to the package and went to my account (and I think?) returned one cause I was confused on working w/the licensing system and
3) I didn't want to blow any “chances” of being able to install v17!
If I could simply flip a switch and return all my licenses I'd be so happy!
I love how Allegorithmic and even FX Home w/HitFilm lets you log into your account and manage your licenses; you can see ALL the activations, and either kill them all at once, or individually. Even Pixologic lets you request deactivations wo/penalty…
I'd frankly LOVE the option of buying a dongle - yes, thank you, YES!
So I'm waiting for v17 to install on my new installation - I'm praying it will work!
Frankly I can't stand Windows 10 w/all the forced updates and quirks and bugs; I was so tempted to go back to Win 8.1 Pro, but opt'd to give Win 10 one more chance - I've been backing up like crazy just so if a program install breaks something I can go back to a working state…
-Will
PS - I do want to say from the bottom of my heart, thanks SO MUCH SideFx for giving us hobbyist and tinkerers access to Houdini; such an amazing package for the asking price, especially with all the apparent love, energy and sweat that goes into each outstanding update!

THIRSTY for this, I hope you iron out your purchasing venue soon!
I would love Gumroad as well having bought a lot of Blender add-ons there, but again, hopefully you'll figure out something, I'd love to have this for Houdini…

I finished watching Rohan Dalvi rocket tutorial and now following along in Houdini 16 - I highly recommend that tutorial! It covers a bit of everything. I'm also new to Houdini starting with 16.

Purchased, the resultant animation w/the rocket puffing up is so cute! Can't wait to dig in and learn how to accomplish the things shown in this video!

Hey Will,
How are you doing with rocket tutorial? I might skip some parts(since much of the stuff is repeatative,i.e. using carve). I also plan on learning some Unity this year.
Hey Son, the pace was a bit too fast for me in this tut, and I felt it assumed a lot more familiarity w/Houdini than I have at the moment, I'm finding that the PluralSight tutorial's pace and hand-holding fits my experience level much better.
I'll come back to this tutorial when I have more Houdini experience under my belt.

Yes, Space + Z - it's a bit jarring since it jerks the viewport to the cursor position, but after that, your rotation is pretty much around where the cursor is located.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Houdini Indie licensing for two separate computers...

Wow, being on Apprentice, I had planned to show my support and upgrading to Indie, especially for this wonderfully new H16 release, but it's definitely a bummer to hear that I'd then be restricted to the installation being on one machine?
Still being mostly new to Houdini, I don't even know if I could keep Apprentice on my work computer (to dabble at lunch) and then there's my laptop while having an Indie license? Don't remember if the file formats between App and Ind are even compatible…
Being a hobbyist, I'm not making any money off my tools at this point in time, but I don't mind paying “indie” prices where possible to again, show my support for these wonderful tools.
Paying “twice” isn't a bank breaker as stated, but I agree, I'm used to Maya LT and Allegorithmic tools (and others) where your login is basically your license authentication; long gone are the days where I was strapped under node-locked software.

Thanks for the pointers, I'm in the same boat - want to focus on H16 for the next year; plan on using it along with UE4 and Unity.
In my case I'll be moving away mostly from Maya LT and Blender.

Noap, no joy, I just went and downloaded the latest drivers, again I have a SpacePilot Pro.
I meant in the settings of the app.
Hi, I appreciate you taking the time to help, first I'm running on Windows, and again, I have a SpacePilot, not Mouse etc.
The nail in the coffin for me, is 1) I don't have those same options in my 3DConn panel as you do (again windows here), and 2) “Houdini” is totally missing as being supported on their website.
So unless there's a profile I'm supposed to download or something to install, the windows drivers don't support Houdini at this time.
Now if there's someone here on Windows with a SpacePilot Pro and they have it working, or if SideFX could chime in and confirm, then that would help eliminate my confusion.
Again, thanks for your help!

I'm sitting here with my SpacePilot and it's not working with H16 Apprentice? Is it just a matter of having Indie or higher? Or is there a configuration profile I need to download etc?
Any pointers to getting my SP working are appreciated!

Hello, It is working out of the box for me on my rMBP + Houdini Indie. I suppose Apprentice shouldn't be any diff.
The connexion shows Houdini Indie in the list of apps ( I don't remember adding it myself when I was using 15.5 ). Did you try adding Houdini manually ?
Noap, no joy, I just went and downloaded the latest drivers, again I have a SpacePilot Pro.
Looking at their supported packages, no mention of Houdini

I noticed at the end it said 3D mous support. Does anyone have a list of compatible 3D mouse products? I was ready to pull the trigger on a 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse but want to make sure it will work with 16 properly.
I have one but I might be able to tell you after Feb 21st when they release the app.

As a Unity games developer I can second this request.
More importantly, as someone who watches of the advancement of Houdini, I wish SideFx would consider an additional revenue stream for indie types - folks how can't afford to pay $7K and then $4K each year to stay current.
I'm not broke but being an individual who enjoys 3D as mostly a hobby, I certainly can't justify those prices for Master.
I may get the odd job here or there for a coupla hundred or so to spruce up a co-worker or family member's camcorder videos with motion graphics and sound effects, but certainly not enough money to afford the asking price.
I've installed Houdini about 2 times now, and each time I find myself liking the package but then I come to terms with how much it would cost where I could use it to replace say Particle Illusion in my video edits - I can't afford it since you're not supposed to use the free or Apprentice versions for paid work.
So I immediately uninstall it until I hear about something else new (v12 is what has me here poking around now…)
Another thing is yes, Escape is within my reach but then I'm missing out on all the effects that is really what attracts me to this package to begin with.
This is again why I uninstall the package - why spend time on learning it if I can never really use it for anything - I'm not trying to build up my portfolio or get a “Houdini job” somewhere, I'm a lone wolf kinda person.
I'm sure there are a BUNCH of us out here who would love to give SideFX some money but it seems like they're not interested!
Why not an Apprentice Indie version for say $600 - $800 or so (with upgrades in the $300 - $500 range) and allow folks to use it commercially for an income cap of say $10K for example.
I'd love to take the time to learn Houdini and see what it can do for me - I simply can't justify any time learning it since I can't afford to own it were I can use it for the stuff that I do…
