Hi I'm trying to render instanced particle with velocity blur in solaris with renderman. But can't get it work. not sure what I missed. If just render the particle point it works. After instance no more velocity blur. I tried set render geometry setting on different prims still not working.
Has anyone get renderman instanser velocity blur worked in solaris?

Hi, I'm looking for advices about using variant to manage asset versions.
Something like every version of mdl/mtl will be a variant (v001, v002...) so you can switch versions inside houdini without go through all the folders.
But, I'm a little bit worried about the performance. If I use this approach there will be a lot of variants.
So generally would variants impact performance a lot?
If I have a big scene with:
300 assets with instance,
each asset have 6 variant set,
each variant set have 10 variants
compare to:
300 assets with instance,
each asset have 2 variant set,
each variant set have 2 variants
Would you feel a big difference when you working in houdini?
Would the rendering time different?
I know it also depends on many other tings, but just a general idea.
Thanks!

We went the other way and made them not show up ever. We decided it isn't worth providing an option. The only time their presence would have any effect is if there is a bug in Houdini. But I believe this change was applied to 19.0... Are you still seeing these placeholder layers in a recent build of 19?
Yes I am. I'm using v19.0.455

Solaris and Karma » Why does unloaded payload get auto loaded after reference?

Hi, Why does unloaded payload get auto loaded after reference?
To demonstrate the question. I have a very simply scene.
The sublayer node load in a payload layer with unload payload option off. Which successfully unload the layer. But after reference It get loaded.
I'm aware I can use config stage node to control all the payload at once. But I'm looking a way to control individually. That's why I use sublayer here so I can choose to switch off anyone I want.
I'm not sure if the reference node create a layer which have a stronger opinion to load the payload is the reason here.
So anyone know why it behave like this?
Another question:
How can I control payload individually without using scene graph tree panel or config stage?
Thanks!

Is there an option to hide those layers in composition panel? Couldn't find any. Thanks.
Technical Discussion » Animate constraint one axis, free move the other two?

Hi,
I'm trying to animate one axis by giving it a hard constraint, then let the other two axis free move by bullet. so the end effect like a ball free to rotate around base on terrain but the forward animation is done by hand animation.
I tried @condof and @condir but got no luck, it either not move or hard constraint in complete control.
I also checked @local_orient, @anchor_type = 2, also not working.
Anyone got a solution?
Thanks.

Hi, new to solaris. I been using the configurestage node recently but can't figure out what's the difference between populate, load and mute. They seems have very close functionality. The concept is very fuzzy to me. Can anyone explain it?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Ok I figure it out.
Since I'm on windows my old HSITE was a network address something like
I changed slash
It worked.
The strange thing is my otl folder and every other folder works under my old HSITE variable except packages. After I changed it, my local machine start recognizing it.

For scanning $HSITE make sure you have a folder that matches the Houdini version like so:
$HSITE/houdinimajor.minor/packages (for example, $HSITE/houdini18.5/packages)
More on packages here [www.sidefx.com]
I had similar issure even I matched houdini version. It still didn't work.

We have a similar setup and works just fine with 18.5 (py 2.7)
Isn't it just a typo or an extra space? As in your first post, you have $HISTE instead of the $HSITE
Do you use any variables in the JSON packages? It could be the wrong syntax, unescaped space, or backward slashes…
You can set the HOUDINI_PACKAGE_VERBOSE variable to get more verbose processing.
Also, make sure HOUDINI_PACKAGE_SKIP is not set (either in the environment or any package).
Thanks, good to know it works on your side. I thought there must be some simple mistakes however I just couldn't find it. I will check again thank you.

It is a system environment variable pushed by windows group policy.

How do you set $HSITE ?

Hi, I'm not sure what I missed, the same json file works at:
but houdini can't find it or any json file under:
My other things like otl and scripts works fine under $HSITE.
I been searching for a while but can't find any similar issues, so does anyone know anything may cause this?
Thanks
