We all have to make our final decisions based on a budget.
If the 9300gs is the maximum that your budget allows, it has to work!
It depends on what are you planning to do with it?
Sincerely I don't think you gonna have much fun with this card!
But i passed by dell.com, they have a weekend offer for 1200$ for a XPS 1530, 15" 2.1Ghz Core Duo, 4GB of Ram, 8600Gt and 320GB HDD. I wouldn't think twice…

Unfortunatly it i sincreasingly popular to advert mmobile GPUs not with the dedicated RAM (256mb DDR3 for example) , but with the “shared + dedicated” memory. In fact the shared memory is normal ram that mobile GPU can use, under certain conditions.
This leads to impressive figures like 1024 mb (256 dedicated + 768 shared) of Ram for the GPU. So always check for dedicated memory specifications!
The shared memory has no importance for 3d modeling apps. Neither has the famous “Vista turbo cache”, some memory that can be used to re-open applications faster etc.
As in the post before: go for a 8600gt with 256mb DDR3. Check sites like
http://www.notebookcheck.net/ [notebookcheck.net]
http://www.notebookreview.com/ [notebookreview.com]
for specific benchmark results of your graphic cards…
confusing I know, but there is no other way, comparing card by card…

I have no doubt that houdini is great character animation program. Rigging should work very fine also compared to Maya. The problem for me as Maya user is that due to the cost of these programs you use one only. Now it is Maya, thanks to the great Houdini Apprentice and HD edition I can sneak into Houdini as much as I want. Thanks for that, SESI!!!!
But the modeling tools leave me a bit in doubt. Maya is no the best modeler, Modo or even XSI are far better. Especially as it looks like Polygon modeling is the weakness of Houdini, NURBS i do in Rhino anyway. Rendering looks ok, for what I use it, even tough MR has great FG features. IPR would be nice, but I ardly use it in Maya.
Therfore I will heave to wait what SESI is doing to solve the modeling issues.
Someone knows if this is on their priority list?
How does Houdini's cycle works? Know we are on 9.5 will there be further major 9.X releases or will they launch a 10 right away?
How was it for the last cycles?

I can just compare it Maya. I use it since many years, I prefer Maya's modeling tools as I tend to keep my operators in order, so after some tweaking I get many, many edit-ops and transform ops and I hate it..so I go back and try to all in one op…effectively loosing time as one eye is always glancing on the node view…I try hard to model in houdini, but it doesn't seem so straight forward to me as the rest of Houdini is (I have to use much less scripting than Maya…)
How do you guys avoid that problem while modeling?. Maya is for sure not the fasted modeler out there but it's ok and I see a lot of effort done by Autodesk in this specific area. Unfortunately I can't judge how important this is for sideFX. The 9.X cycles seems to concentrate on the awesome new GUI and many, many great ready made ops for FX. Fantastic online help etc in general to make houdini more accessible to newcomers and users of competitor's apps, don't they?

I would like to know more about the general use of Houdini.
It is sold as a “complete” package like Maya and XSI.
But are there people using it like that? For Modeling, Rigging, Animating, FX and Rendering? I'm a Maya user since many years, and always used Maya for virtually everything, apart of NURBS modeling, where I use Rhino.
I enjoy myself in using Houdini a lot, just using the Apprentice Edition, but i wonder if it could ever do, what Maya does: being the heart of my workflow.
I do a lot of product Viz, some FX and Animations. Hardly any Movie & CG integration. But background and Architectural Integration.
How does your pipeline look like?
Are all of you using some other applications as well? If so what kind?
Solely expert applications like ZBrush, specialized in one area or another big package like Maya, XSI?
Thanks to everybody to share your experience to a curious Houdini starter,

The license manager ask you to install a free license.
Wait til it works, turn off your firewall (also the Windows on) and Anitivirus.

I totally agree…
Houdini makes it easy to become a fan. It is marketing, but it's nicely made!!!
Great tutorials section, the renowned Apprentice and HD editions, daily builds…fantastic! SESI hold back a release for Siggraph, they launch the product when it's finished! The application is getting better and better, more user friendly than ever…
Last but not least the community is small but charming!

maybe we also could redo some old school tutorials,
like the ones posted on
http://www.3dlinks.com/links.cfm?categoryid=13&subcategoryid=145 [3dlinks.com]
Some of them are still very cool (I love Audrey, it was my first project done in Houdini). The rocket tutorial or the roller coaster ride where also very cool!
Unfortunately I can't find them anymore with source files and so on…
However I agree that the most needed are tutorials addressing Mantra.

I'm following the latest developments of Houdini with great enthusiasm.
We all know that Houdini is on on par with Maya, XSI & Co when it is up to to features and tools, but the rest of the world is stil quite sceptical regarding usabilty and GUI of Houdini. I guess giving rebirth to the Apprentice competition could be a great way to spread the word, get new users into the world of Houdini and get some nice results to show off!!!
I guess it would be cool to see this competition in a nearby future!!!

ja, ein Vorarlberger der in Genf lebt zum Beispiel…:-))
However, to answer the question: I feel thatHoudini is running fine with every Nvidia card with+ 256Mb Ram. If you plan to use other 3d apps, especially Maya or StudioTools stay away from ANY gamer card.
If you can afford a Quadro 1600M go for it!!!
However you should have a look on the Lenevo T61p with Quadro 570M, and HP 8510w, also with a 570M
Grüsse aus Genf

I'm not particularly happy with the development of Maya since it was bought by Autodesk, so I was considering to switch over to XSI for modeling and Mental Ray rendering.
however I'm curious to get the trail of teh latest release…

Is it me or do we have back the slow help system?
In 9.2.244 the help was blazing now it looks again (like 9.1.157) quite slow.
Anybody suffers the same?

looks quite Houdini like…I will download a demo asap.
However, I doubt that I would ever get used to this bubble button GUI. They could at least make the user chose between a flat and teh standard GUI.
What I really like in XSI personalization is that you can run it in MAYA mode.
This helps a lot when using Maya and XSI in the same pipeline. I regret that Houdini didin't go the QWERT and Alt ViewControl way. I use both apps, Maya and Houdini, so I'm always struggling when using the other app after a while…

If I may suggest ONE thing in Houdini,
Why the app can't remember that I prefer with Autosave on?
I always have to remember to turn it on, each time I start the app…
That's pretty dangerous.
