Thank you for an extensive reply. I saw people on redshift forum are saying that 2x3090 with NVlink are pooling the memory so I thought perhaps it would be the case for OpenCl as well.

Hi everyone. Does anyone have experience with several gpu's ? If I use 2x3090 in SLI. Do they add up memory or only 24gb used ?
And does Houdini even support SLI ? I remember there was no support to use 2 gpu's at the same time before.

Technical Discussion » Cloth Capture custom weights

Hi everyone. Does anyone know if it is possible to adjust or create custom weights to use with cloth deform ? I can't understand what clothCapture attr type is. Point deform is easy. There is an array of points and array of weights so you can modify or create your own but for the cloth capture it's something different and I can't figure out what that is and if it's even possible to modify it.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Noctua NH-U12A which I was aiming for costs 140Cad approximately before tax. I got corsair for 169 before tax. Not a big difference really.

I was wondering about Noctua air coolers since they have good reputation but eventually went with water corsair icue 280 pro. Temp. never got higher than 65 yet. Tried gaming and short sims but I believe after a few hours of sims or rendering it will be much warmer. Will see.

Hi everyone. I'm. sure that someone here has Ryzen latest gen. I was wondering what type of cooling do you use. Either Air or Water ? I'm sure cpu will heat a lot during the sims or render so I was wondering if Air cooler will be enough. I'm a bit sceptical about water cooling for the reason of reliability but I'm not sure Air will give enough performance to keep cpu cool. I got Ryzen9 x5950

Hi everyone. I'm trying to make Sublime text 3 shows Autocompletion for HOM. I found a few topics describing how to make it work but they seems quite old and I have no luck with it.
Does anyone have that experience ?
PyCharm would work too.
Thanks.

Technical Discussion » Houdini 18 doesn't see eGPU on ubuntu
- maxpayne

Hi everyone. I have a Mac mini. Recently installed ubuntu 20.04. Installed Houdini 18.5 latest prod build. When I open Houdini and go to parameters to choose OpenCL device it has only CPU in it and says that there is no device if you choose GPU. Ubuntu itself sees both internal Intel UHD and eGPU Radeon rx5700. I installed drivers for radeon, however I'm not sure they work as expected. When I Boot ubuntu with connected eGPU to it it freezes on booting (just black screen. If I hot plug after booting it works.
Does anyone have similar experience ? Any suggestions will be appreciated.
PS. Same setup but with macOS. Houdini sees all gpu so that has something to do with ubuntu.
Update. Tried to run this command: hgpuinfo and got this result:
Could not load devices on platform: AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing (Version: OpenCL 2.1 AMD-APP (3143.9)). Ensure that the driver libraries are in LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
No OpenCL platform has the specified device type (HOUDINI_OCL_DEVICETYPE): GPU. Falling back to built-in CPU OpenCL driver.
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Technical Discussion » Grain sim exploding

Hi everyone. I'm doing snow simulation using grain vellum. On the image below. Black particles(object) activate white ones(ground) using “popawaken”. Once ground particles being activated, some of them are exploding for some reasons. I did a test when I activated all particles at once and it works well. I tried to increase substeps, collision passes etc. Nothing solved the problem. My guess was that perhaps when black particle is activating white ones, they are inside the radius of the white particle and it cause penetration and explosion, but activation radius set to a high value so particles are being activated way in advance. Seems like with less particle separation value it's more stable.
Does anyone know what might be the cause of this issue ?
Thank you.

Hi Aizatulin. Thank you for your reply. That's exactly what I need. I supposed to use tangents for rotation axis. The way I was getting rotation axis was subtracting current point position from position of the previous point. And there is one thing I can't understand is subtracting central point from current position and then adding it back. What is it for ?
@P -= pos;
@P *= R;
@P += pos;

It is originally straight and I'm using point deform to drive the shape but then I'm adding details on it and I would like those details to be twisted as well.

Hi Guys. I need to get curved object to be twisted. “Bend” node won't work here as I will have complex shape later on and twisting should consider the shape of the object. I'm using a curve to drive the object shape so I have attributes such as pivot points and axis for each point. The only thing I need to do is to rotate those points around axis on specific angle. Sounds quite straightforward but I can't make it work. I tried lots of approaches but nothing worked well. On the image below. On the screen left I have the object that I need to be twisted. Middle one is the result that I got using matrices. It looks promising but points got scaled for some reasons. And the right one is the Quaternion rotation that does something but looks like axis is wrong even though it should be correct.
Does anyone know how to do it properly ?
Thank you

I was also getting error about “init_camera failed”. Backed up to version 2.1.0 instead of 2.2.0 and something has changed. But I still have errors. This time it's on step 06_Prepare_Dense_Scene AliceVision…
ERROR: unrecognized option ‘–evCorrection’
ERROR: unrecognized option ‘–computeNormalMaps’
ERROR: unrecognized option ‘–outputMesh’
ERROR: unrecognized option ‘–inputMesh’
ERROR: unrecognized option ‘–useUDIM’
I guess may be that happens because I switched to v 2.1.0 and it doesn't support some features ? But 2.2.0 doesn't work at all.

Technical Discussion » HQUEUE problems

Hi Sean. Thanks for your advice. I will give it a try. I did a test just now. Created clean scene with sphere and camera. Submit it to hqueue on a local machine and it worked well. Render was done. So apparently there is some path in the scene that Houdini doesn't like. Then I tried to submit the same job to network pc. It failed with error: Access denied. Even though the service is running under username account. Firewall is off, uac is off. Is there any other ideas why it fails ?
Another fun thing is happening with variables. $HQROOT right now look like:
It feels like every time I restart houdini it adds H: set HQROOT into variable.
Thanks.

Hi. I'm having a troubles using hqueue. I have laptop and mac that I want to use for rendering and simulations. First I'm trying to render a frame on my main machine which is server and client at the same time. Job goes to the farm. First step “Prepare Render Jobs (frames 373-375)” goes through successfully. But then when rendering actual frames I get error with this log:
I tried to open ntpath.py, to take a look what's in it. It makes names and paths usable for Houdini but what names and paths ? All names I use looks correct to me.
Did anyone have similar issues ?
Another problem is very common. When I submit job to another pc I get error “Access denied”. I read bunch of topics but nothing really helped. When I try to change log on parameters in HqueueClient service I get error that service cannot be runned under that cridentials.

Hi everyone. I'm trying to bake a texture using bake texture rop. Everything seems working fine but output texture has bright areas near the uv seams. Does anyone know where it comes from and how to get rid of that ? I've tried a lot of things. Lights on,lights off, changing normals, different projection methods, sampling etc. Nothing works.

Hello guys. I have a pyro simulation. Sometimes I have to stop simulation and continue it later. I use explicit cache and it works for me. But I have a problem. I did some tests. I've compared full range simulation and simulation that was continued using initial state and I got different results. Is that possible to get the same results ?
