I have just looked into style sheets as I need to access groups from packed/instanced geometry and yes when I use a group name in the ‘Value’ field nothing happens, but when I use a number (primitive number?) it works just fine. Im using Houdini 16.0.705.

Technical Discussion » HIPLC treated as HIPNC - Error: Output driver not supported in Apprentice version

Rendering using MPlay works, this is either via the IPR button in the Redshift shelf tab or the ‘Open IPR’ button in the Redshift_ROP.
Redshift IPR rendering within Houdini itself, either via the ‘Render View Panel’ or using the ‘Render Region Tool’ does not work, this is where the error “Output driver not supported in Apprentice version” occurs.

Sorry, I should have mentioned. Building a new scene from scratch using the Redshift ROP and IPR are fine, I don't get the above error.
@aRtye - I have the full version of Houdini, no Indie license. You must be right regarding your above statement.
But in saying that Houdini starts in LC (indie) mode but the error mentions the Apprentice version, which it's clearly not running. I'm not saving the scene at all just following the tutorial.
A lot of tutorials use ‘.HIPLC’ and they work fine, it just must be some restriction regarding the Redshift Output ROP in this example.

I have Houdini 16.0.640 - the full version and am using Redshift Demo 2.5.29 plugin version 16.0.633 .
I’m following a Rohan Dalvi tutorial for redshift (https://vimeo.com/178602203). The tutorial hip file is ‘Limited Commercial', it opens Houdini in ‘Indie Limited Commercial’ mode.
When in the IPR render view I can render using redshift once. Then when I try to render a second time I get an error “Output driver not supported in Apprentice version”.
I posted on the Redshift forum about this and got the following answer:
Why would Houdini give me this error? It clearly shows in the Houdini title bar as “Houdini Indie Limited-Commercial” so it is not in Apprentice mode at all and therefore the plugin should be working, right?

Hi,
I’ve seen this problem before. As far as I know, the problem is related to the fact that the Houdini full version can’t work with the Houdini Indie scenes (limited commercial .hiplc files). You can open these files with the full version, check them and even render them, but as soon as you modify anything, the scene internally becomes not commercial (apprentice .hipnc file). You can check it yourself: if you modify anything in a .hiplc scene and try to save it from the full Houdini version, it will be saved as .hipnc file.
So, once the scene internally is in non-commercial apprentice mode, something that can happen even after the first render, the scene can’t be rendered anymore because the apprentice version doesn’t support external renderers. You only can use the MPlay IPR, but all the render view, render region and all the RS ROP render functions will be disabled.
Hope this helps,
-Juanjo

Thanks twod. I did see the post regarding issues with an ATI V7750. Seem's that Quadro has the upper hand at the moment.

Im looking into purchasing a FirePro V7800 to use with H11. I'd like to hear back from anybody who is currently using these type of cards. Are they working ok with H11's OpenGL3 support? Are the latest drivers stable? Or perhaps an nVidia Quadro 2000 is the way to go. The only reason I prefer the FirePro is that u get a higher spec card for your dollar.

I turned off smooth lines and the aero interface but still no difference. I found the level of detail setting which made a marked difference when set at .001, still jerky in the viewport but usable.
Any suggestions on a new video card that would show a marked difference from my ‘7600GT 256MB’.
9800GTX, GTX260 or Quadro FX1700, these are in my price range (just for the quadro)…..
i am currently running a Q6600 OC'd @ 3600Mhz
Thanks, Nic.

I have set up a simple ‘Particle from Fluid Object’ using a default sphere at radius of 1, once done the blue guide geometry spheres are shown in the viewport. Now, my viewport responds very slowly to any movement, also the selecting and display of node info is slowed a little as well. When the Visualization is changed to ‘Sprites’ the viewport speed is normal again.
Same happens when the (red) collision guide geometry is shown in RDB sims.
Anything to do with my nVidia 7600GT (ver169.25, Vista64) video card ?? Maybe time for an upgrade?
Thanks, Nic.

Hi Steven,
Thank you for the reply, you have more than answered my problem, the ‘Reselect for current tool’ works well!. I have the 3D BUZZ videos you mentioned but I watched them a while ago and most likely forgot a few basic things… so much to remember, practice makes perfect..
Thanks again, Nic.

hi claudio,
How do you go about adding or removing points/prims from an existing group without creating a new group or typing the pattern numbers manually.
I cant figure it out, I must be missing something simple ….
Thanks, Nic.

The ‘Transfer Selection to Pattern’ button in Group surface node doesn't seem to be described in the help file, it seems self explanatory enough but it doesn't seem to work like I thought.
I assumed that the it transfers your selected points/primitives to the ‘Pattern’ area below it. When I select some points/prims and click the button it just selects all the points or primitives in the object and puts the result in the ‘Pattern’ area.
Any help is appreciated.

Simon, is there any way to use these SOPs with the latest Houdini build 9.1.179 as I get a DSO error when loading Houdini saying file was intended for a different Houdini version.
Do I need to re compile these to work, if so do I have to grab a C compiler for the task?
Thanks, Nic.

When adjusting an object in the view port using the move/rotate/scale handles the objects parameter's don't update in the ‘parameter pane’ while adjusting them, only once the adjustment is complete?
Is there a setting somewhere to enable the parameters to change whilst i'm using the objects handles?
Thanks,
Nic
