I've got an Imac 5k i7 4ghz with AMD M295X, so I only speak for this model.
The gfx card is not supported due to buggy OpenGL drivers in OSX. Though they might have been fixed in El Capitan 10.11.2 - I don't know yet, waiting for a response from Twod. See post; https://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_forum&Itemid=172&page=viewtopic&p=191994#191994 [sidefx.com]
If you download the latest H15 daily build, Houdini crashes only sometimes now. The viewport is slow and becomes unusable with 100k> points.
Fingers crossed that the driver is fixed and multisampling will be re-enabled soon!

Twod, has AMD fixed their drivers for OSX El Capitan 10.11.2 yet?
If so, have you enabled multisampling in any of the H15 builds?

There's a method presented by Ari Danesh in the Go Procedural Terrain Generation tutorials on Vimeo:
Houdini Projects: Terrain Generation 1: https://vimeo.com/116364169 [vimeo.com]
about 1hr 3m in, he uses 3 grids and a switch; a low res for low poly game export, base res for viewport display, and high res for rendering out.

I'm running H15.0.278 on an iMac 5k Radeon R9 M295X in El Capitan 10.11.1.
The viewport is VERY slow, it becomes unusable for 300k> point models - timer and beach ball cursors when wanting to do anything.
I get crashes daily and all I'm doing is creating procedural terrain. One gets in the habit of CMD-S on every change made.
With the fixes made in the daily 15.0.274 build Houdini is usable on my iMac. The older versions it was a disaster.
Apparently the problems on the unsupported Macs are due to Apples home grown OpenGL drivers which are super buggy, and not the fault of the Houdini dev team. Perhaps some fixes will be present in Apples next dot update.

Do not use H13, that will not work on latest Apple OSX for sure. Not sure why you have H14 and H15 problems though. I would recommend dual boot with Linux, Ubuntu maybe and see what performances and stability you have there.
I appreciate the quick reply. Houdini 13 FX works fine in El Capitan (but I don't have a license for that one). Thus I don't see why H13 Indie can't work just as well.
All of production is OS X based - iOS 9 development - so I wanted to avoid having to boot into another OS just for Houdini work. But since I need Houdini as part of my workflow I will be doing just that as a last resort. H13 Indie will meet my needs if I can get the UI to respond

Houdini 14 and 15 (production and dailies) are completely unusable under OS X El Capitan 10.11.1. Crashes and lock ups galore when working through the quick start tutorials, doing basic things like dolling a large grid, and just about anything else.
I'm running it on an iMac 5k, Late 2014, 4GHz i7, 24GB Ram, AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4GB.
Having studied the forums I'm aware that my video card/OS combo is apparently not supported thanks to Apples buggy Open GL implementation which they appear to be reluctant to throw resources at to fix.
I've paid for Houdini Indie. I would now like to use a copy to get some work done.
So I've installed Houdini 13 Indie, yet on launch the startup splash appears and the splash and Houdini are not responsive to any clicks or keyboard shortcuts. It happens with the Houdini 13 license administrator as well. Though Houdini 13 FX will launch in non-commericial mode fine - I can click things and use it. Houdini Apprentice also is not responsive to any mouse clicks.
Running them from the Houdini terminal doesn't fix it.
The only way to regain control of computer is to CMD-OPT-ESC and close it. The crash logs produced are empty, ie: 0KB files.
Running from terminal, I do get the following warning:
hindie *** WARNING: Method userSpaceScaleFactor in class NSView is deprecated on 10.7 and later. It should not be used in new applications. Use convertRectToBacking: instead.

So, any idea how I can get Houdini 13 Indie running without reverting to any other OS?
Thanks.
