Hi, Houdini is lagging 2 - 3 seconds whenever I drop a node
on the left hand corner it says evaluating python, sometimes it doesn't say anything
happening on houdini 19 and 20 Indie
any thoughts of what this could be?
thx

"I WANT AI IN HOUDINI ALL OVER PLACE NOW!"
This would catapult houdini into the next paradigm shift in graphics software.
In reality things have changed so much since this last evolution of a.i. That now 3d companies need to design for a.i instead of users if they want to stay relevant. Houdini has the advantage that it is very programmable and you can do almost anything. So having an internal a.i that simplifies the software by 90% will make houdini the default winner. I think thats the only way it will survive in a world where creating simulations, videos, with prompting will just get exponentially better the only advantage a 3d package will have is if you can use it to prompt and adjust things with its tools.

Thanks Swest,
I was under the impression that VNC is slower than remote desktop.
In a way I kinda would prefer remote access but I always notice a bit of lag. Ive tried TeamViewer, Parsec, Splashtop.
Was looking into Teradici and they have a new software called hp anywhere but haven't seen any good reviews etc.
I would have my big PC in l.a and would be working from Europe I wonder if that is even feasible with remote workflows without lags. I need to play animations without seeing them skip etc.

Hi,
I will be moving and possibly traveling in the near future and was thinking about the best mini pc for houdini Sims and rendering that I can get for like $3500
I was looking at the base model of the Mac Studio M2 but don't think it will be faster than if I buy a custom PC with say one 4090
and fit it in a mini itx case?
Any recommendation on specs would be helpful.
thx

and if you still believe prompting won't work with simulations - it could definitely work with software .
Write me a node network that creates a : Simulation of realistic waterfall with sharp rocks on the side, add a boat at the bottom wrestling with waves separate all in various layers for comping. and create 20 variations of the waterfall.

another person in denial.
hahaha
prompt example for hard heads out there.
Simulation of realistic waterfall with sharp rocks on the side, add a boat at the bottom wrestling with waves separate all in various layers for comping.
then wait 30 min. done.
all we need is someone gathering all the simulation data and in a few years things like this would be a piece of cake to do and wait time will probably be way less.
how is this so hard to understand? people that have been working in the industry forever are just scared IMO

Ok chatgpt and midjourney are not a breakthrough sure ,hahaha the hype is completely unwarranted. No offence but you sound like a tech snob. Thinking you are so smart and clever for following A.i for 15 years.
You think a text prompt for simulations will be completely useless for the vfx industry ok hahaha. I am just not going to take more time to respond here. With all the respect IMO you fall in the indenial camp.

It is clear that we are in a A.I revolution. Whoever denies this is living under a rock or in denial.
For me there is no longer any reasons tokeep learning Houdini if A.I can learn more efficiently and I can just talk to the A.I to get what I want. Granted Chatgpt cannot give us accurate results. But I think this task of teaching the A.I should be done by SIDEFX not chatgpt.
So my question is - Will SideFX teach an A.I how to Use Houdini and then give us access to that A.i? are they working on this?
because if not then I might just jump ship to a nother 3d software that knows how important this is to stay relevant in the future
also there are already some A.i Papers of midjourney type a.i tool that creates beautiful water simulations...the only way houdini can stay relevant or any 3d software imo is if they implement and teaching their own A.I ASAP to compete with midjourney simulation animation software coming 2 years down the line

It would be good if they changed the whole approach to houdini the u.i & u.x and make it fit solaris and karma in an elegant way and declutter the whole thing.
they need to make Houdini fun to use, and just adding more tools while keeping the program looking and feeling like 1990
won't do.
just my two cent
I know some old die hard fans won't like this idea but I am talking about younger generations of artist that want to have speed on their side.

Obviously SideFX needs to revamp its U.I/U.X I have to jump between so many windows just to render. This is absurd. Material assignment and the material interface is such a drag visually. Parameter windows needs better organization not everything on the same hierarchy. Just making some text bolder than other to differentiate the operations can go a long way. What if you hover over a node and there is another icon that if you click it gives you an example of how to use that node in a small window.
These are things at the top of my head, what if improving houdini was my job? hummm.

But I really hope they do their sneak peak well like every time! It’s way way way better than those “apple like talk videos” or those “boring half tutorial feature snippets” from the others
yeah weird half tutorials sucks, they should just teach us something from start to finish, instead of browsing through complicated setups and self promoting , it very cheesy and unclassy. do a webinar and have someone thats good teach something cool from start to finish including render etc.
love masterclasses thou

Already the fact that they haven't release 19 yet is a big turn off, when blender and c4d are pumping out releases every few months.
You have free access to daily builds with bug fixes, and occasionally a new feature. Combine that with the fact that SideFX support is probably the most interactive and responsive of any other DCC company out there, and will get your critical bug fixed ASAP.
Meanwhile, Labs is adding new features every month or so usually.
Yeah I get your point, if I was an expert in Houdini I would probably feel the same way. But sidefx already has the expert as customers, I am talking about what would benefit them in terms of getting new people into the software and have them stay with it.i don't want the latest bug fixes or new nodes on the experimental or new nodes from sidefx labs. We need a breakthrough here that will make Houdini more usable for independent artist.
I would like to know are they working on making the render process easier and more intuitive. Are they trying to solve the clutter u.i and u.x experience? can they pack the code in a way that we don't have to be typing the same code all the time.
Even if the release is buggy I can always work on previous release but I would like to know they are actively working on this instead of waiting a year to figure it out.
as always with every critique comes praise for the amazing software, and that I would't even know how to start in making the software more approachable except by making conceptual generalizations such as the ones above..

One thing is certain and I think we can all agree. If SideFX wants to attract more typical C4D or Blender artists, it will have to work on finding a way to make Houdini more approachable. Houdini is known as very technical, almost impossible to learn if you don't know to program.
agree 100%. I am very interested in seeing what Houdini does for 19. I have been working in houdini this past year and if 19 doesn't have any usability + ui improvements I think they will lose a big market share of people from c4d or blender that may have tried houdini. Specially since c4d and blender will only get better and better incorporating node workflows. It makes strategic sense to get houdini not more technical adding more and more tools but easier so more people stick with it.
The whole ui experience is dreadful. Look at c4d r25 ui for how they are actively reworking their u.i
Already the fact that they haven't release 19 yet is a big turn off, when blender and c4d are pumping out releases every few months. If people are dedicating their time to learning such hard software it would be good to get more news about what sidefx is doing to make things easier for artist.
Yet obviously I give props to the sidefx team for making such a magical software where we can do anything, I just would like it to be my main tool.

Hi,
My question is regarding importing face morphs from Daz or Character Creator
into Houdini.
I really like the kinefx animation tools but if I can't import face morphs I will have to work in a different 3dpackage...
any help is appreciated
thx
