Does anyone else experience following problem?
Import/create mesh, do some transform on object level. Than create instance, use imported object as object to instance, do some transform on instance, hit render, instance is moved on wrong position. In viewport it works OK, but not in rendering. I submitted this as a bug year ago I think, but I want to check if maybe I am doing something wrong here.

Start installation as root. If you do not know how to do that, please learn more about Linux, that is basic.
If you don't want to be helpful, please don't just post to be insulting. The prevalence of comments like this is the primary reason why I stopped bothering to use Linux. When something doesn't work, I don't find it appropriate to belittle someone for trying to get help.
I was trying to be helpful, telling him step by step what to do, especially with root access, might harm him more than help. I did not want to insult anyone by suggesting to learn basics of Linux, just wanted to be sure that OP goes a bit more on basics before starting doing stuff with root privileges, chill out friend.
@Kaz
How did you install Houdini, using terminal? On CentOS you are entering root mode by typing ‘su’ and hitting enter. You will be asked for root password. Type password and hit Enter again. Than repeat installation while you are root. After installation close terminal.

There was 10.8.3 release with new drivers apparently. Is there better OpenGL support there? Does anyone knows something about it?

Yeah I think Ari confused a lot of newbies with this.
That is not related to Houdini, he was using Apple script to create project structure. And than he was using that structure within Houdini. it is like you manually create project folder, and inside that create other folders you need … Than open Houdini and save scene and other assets in those folders. There is no something like that in Houdini. Of course not that you can not make something like that with Python.

Well, buying a Houdini and waiting for someone to write plugin for Octane or Vray would be definitely bad move. What if something like that never happens
Mantra is capable of doing photorealistic renders. Of course it take some time to learn, but with PBR it is much easier to get nice results without too much work and understanding whats happening under the hood.
Turn on PBR, place Env light, HDR, some area lights, tweak samples and that is it. Plus MantraSurface is uber shader that is really easy to figure out if you have some CG background.

PBR. Environment light with HDR, also portal lights on windows. And I think I have one Area light inside. Render time was around 20min as I can recall.
