Hello Enivob
First thanks for taking the time to help and to post a file. I tried your scene and here's what I can say:
The VEX code in the attribute wrangle would force us to select each colors by typing their values. The problem is: there are 46 parts in this imported mesh, so the code would be too long to type.
There should be an automatic way to select parts, and here's why the polydoctor's manifoldnumber attribute could be used. The manifold attribute goes from 0 to 45.
I think we should do something like this:
For each manifoldnumber, create a new mesh.
But is it possible to generate 46 new meshes from a single node? Which node would it be?
And again : Is Polydoctor the best way to go for separating merged meshes in Houdini?
Thanks
Gz

Hello again, sorry many questions today
I have imported an STL file from a CAD app. Well, you know how messy it is modelling wise.
However in my experience with other apps it is possible to get normal renders with these kind of objects.
In Houdini I can't get a good render. I tried the node facet, normal, etc, but could not fix the problem. I think the “Polydoctor” node could come in handy, however I didn't manage to use it properly. Any ideas about which options I should set?
What's strange is that some materials increase the problem. Check the attachment. With the material “piano lacquer” I have almost a normal result, but with the “titanium” material, all hell breaks loose.
Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks
Gz

hello,
I'm working on a STL import that was exported from Solidworks, and was in several parts. In Houdini the STL is all merged into one object.
I don't want to select all these faces one by one.
What's the official way to separate a mesh into parts in Houdini?
I have tried the Polydoctor node. What's cool is that it automatically shows the different parts that the object is made of: see attached pic.
Is Polydoctor the way to go?
With Polydoctor, I tried to extract the attribute “manifoldnumber” inside a “for each” but I don't know what to do next.
Thanks for the help…

Hello, I can't find a script folder in my $home folder, and in the installation fodler there is a script folder but 456.cmd is nowhere to be found. So how can I turn on autosave each time I start Houdini 16.5?

Thanks Goldfarb I did that and immediatly got an answer from support!
“You can define where to save your back up files by setting the environment variable HOUDINI_BACKUP_DIR”
I didn't know about this environment variable. THANKS A LOT Hou Support! It works well
So half of the RFE is answered.

XSI: move mouse left = zoom in
Houdini and Maya: move mouse left = zoom out
In XSI, when you move left or down, you zoom in, which seems logical because in both cases you bring your mouse closer to your body. It's like if you bring an object closer to your eyes to watch it closer. So Softimage got that right.

Hello,
In XSI and Maya, when you drag the mouse down, you zoom in.
In Hou, when you drag the mouse down, you zoom out.
Is it possible to setup the mouse so it zooms in when dragged down?
PS : and how can I change my signature??

Hi all,
How are you?
1) How can I limit the number of saved and autosaved Numbered Backups? I don't want them to fill up my drive…
2) How can I put the /backup/ folder in another path, drive?
Thanks in advance, see you!!!!

Hello I have some newbie questions about the environment variables.
I want to organize my files in the following way:
User prefs in : C:\Users\%usernane%\AppData\Roaming\Sidefx\houdini16.0
Personal Houdini files in : C:\Users\%usernane%\Documents\My houdini projects
In Houdini.env I already set this :
HOUDINI_USER_PREF_DIR = “C:\Users\%usernane%\AppData\Roaming\Sidefx\houdini16.0”
Now for the other variables:
1) What is the “home” directory for? User prefs or user personal files? Can I set it in Houdini.env?
2) What is the difference between $hip and $job? Which one of these 2 should be pointing to “My houdini projects”? Can I set them in Houdini.env?
Thanks and see you,
Gz

Thanks that seems to have solved my problem.
From what I understand , you gave me 2 ways to fix this problem.
With the “delete sop method”, in the delete sop, I put pattern = “N” (without the quotes) , is that correct?

Thanks. At the Polywire output, I tried to add a “point - old” node, and at the right of the “add normal” button , I entered $NX $NY $NZ, but it does not work. Any idea?

Hello guys. I'm posting an image. As you can see, in my tree, what comes from “sweep1” is shaded but what comes from “Polywire2” is not. I checked all options and can't find where I went wrong.
Any help would be great!
BTW I'm following Rohan Dalvi's Rocket Ship tutorial.
Thanks and see you soon,
Gz

OK thanks but what should I select before applying “glue adjacent”? The columns? When I select the columns then click “glue adjacent”, the problem remain the same : the columns start to fall into pieces as soon as I hit the “play” button, although they should be degraded only when the wrecking ball touch them.
On top of that, how come the “glue adjacent” tool is not part of this tutorial? Is this tutorial incomplete?
Thanks
David

Hello Johm, thanks for this answer. Yes the delete key does answer my question.
McNistor, yeah I'm still around! But mostly using XSI as it's quicker for me. I still want to switch to Houdini.
For the MMB problem, have you done a video showing what it does exactly? So the developers could understand what they should do.
See you,
David

Hello there!
I'm back!!! So now I'm trying to learn these “Go Procedural” tutorials, and I'm in the “Quickstart” PDF. At page 37 (13 of 16), I must break the columns with a wrecking ball. But some things are not going as intended.
- Unfortunately, when I use the “make breakable” tool, the columns start to fall into pieces as soon as I hit the “play” button, although they should be degraded only when the wrecking ball touch them. How do I fix this problem?
- Also another question : why is the wrecking ball going in a single straight direction? Shouldn't it change direction as it bounces on the columns?
Thanks and see you soon,
David

Yes Marty thanks, I'll surely do that.
So now there are 2 “solved” things in this thread. Let's go forward with the next question I had about polysplit.
First, I have to say again, the Houdini documentation seems incomplete. There's no step by step, illustrated description on how to use Polysplit. That's why I'm asking here.
In the beginning of this thread I was asking this question : “If I add an edge by mistake, how can I remove it, but still stay in the polysplit mode in order to add more edges?”
I added a video for people to see what I'm talking about.
When I try to CTRL+Z in Houdini, it just deletes the full set of new edges, not the last one as in XSI…
Thanks,
G

I think what McNistor wants is not an exact copy of XSI tools (tell me if I'm wrong). If Houdini developers have the freedom to create new tools from scratch, it is better to check what already exists and to improve that.
I think XSI modeling tools are a great example because at the time XSI 1.5 was released (with its new polygon modeling tools), Softimage's team observed what already existed, especially Mirai, and improved what they saw. So as soon as in 2002, the XSI 1.5 box modeling tools were much better than Max or Maya's.
Today, it is still necessary to check other app's tools. For example, this is Modo's own “add edge / Polysplit” tool : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrC_blYEE9g [youtube.com] . After 1:50, the demo artist connects a new edge to an existing point. There is no highlighted edge, only the point that will be created or connected is highlighted, so there's definitely no confusion about what's going to happen.
