There have been a few threads in the forum about it, and I did put in on the system requirements page a few weeks ago but I guess people don't read that.

However, the fix for the GEForce driver will not be available until the 319 series is released, which appears to be in the spring timeframe according to Nvidia. Until then, GEForce users will need to use the 306.97 driver (or earlier driver). I will post a new message when we verify that the GEForce driver is fixed.
Again, you only need this driver fix if you are running Windows 8.
Thought I'd repost this for those of you that missed it……

Great feedback! By all means, please feel free to continue with this discussion of features you'd like to see in Houdini, but if you'd like to actually have your BUG or RFE recorded and tracked in our database, please take the time to log it here.

Next major Houdini release will not support 32bit
Just wanted to give you a heads up that the next major release of Houdini will not support 32 bit platforms.
32 bit versions of Houdini are only used by a minority of our customers at this point. Most customers in production are using 64bit windows or linux and given this reasonable heads up (a good number of months away), the remainder will be able to transition to 64bit as well.

As many of you know, Windows 8 is coming out this Friday, Oct.26th. We have been testing with the RTM version and are pleased to announce that Houdini 12.1 will be supported on Windows 8 Professional, should you choose to upgrade or purchase a new workstation running win 8.
Houdini will not run on Windows 8 RT - the ‘tablet only’ version.
We are phasing out our support of Win XP and Vista but will continue to provide support for Houdini on Win 7 and Win 8.

Just a licensing reminder re: our branding change.
Q.I have a license installed but can't run Houdini. What do I do?
A. Check to ensure you're trying to run the right product for the licence you have. We recently changed our branding so that Houdini Escape is now called Houdini and Houdini Master is now called Houdini FX. Therefore, launching ‘Houdini’ now attempts to run Houdini (formerly known as Escape) and launching ‘Houdini FX’ attempts to run ‘Houdini FX’ (formerly known as Master).

Houdini Lounge » OSX Mountain Lion released

For those Mac users out there who are keen to jump on the latest version of OSX (Mountain Lion), here's some things you'll need to do to for icons and docs:
Apple no longer includes X11 with its operating system. You'll need to get xquartz - the community supported version of X11 for OSX.
PROBLEM: Houdini has no icons or Houdini cannot run because it failed to generate icons.
SOLUTION: Download and install XQuartz from http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/26593/xquartz/ [macupdate.com]
PROBLEM: Help does not work. Houdini complains about “no such file or directory” for pyconfig.h.
SOLUTION: Create a symbolic link to pyconfig.h so that Houdini can find the file. Open a Terminal app and type the following commands:
sudo mkdir -p /usr/include/python2.6
sudo ln -sf /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/include/python2.6/pyconfig.h /usr/include/python2.6/pyconfig.h

How to log bugs and rfe's (sugs) for Houdini
--------------------------------------
Option #1
-----------
If you are up to date on your AUP (Annual Upgrade Plan) you can have direct access to our database in order to log bugs and rfe's (suggestions) and view the current status of your bugs. If you don't already have access, please contact your Sales Representative and they'll help you get set up and provide you with all the details. This is by far the fastest and most effective way of getting your issue into the hot little hands of the developers.
https://www.sidefx.com/services [www.sidefx.com]
Option #2
----------
You can e-mail your bug or rfe (suggestion) to support@sidefx.com. They will review your issue prior to submitting it into our database and may contact you if they require more information.
Option #3
----------
You can also submit your bug using our online form at sidefx.com > Support > Submit Bugs and RFEs:
http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=768&Itemid=239 [www.sidefx.com]
No matter which of these three options you use, there are a few key pieces of information that we need to know:
What platform you're on (Windows, Linux, OSX)
What version of Houdini you're using. (eg. 15.5.565)
Steps on how to reproduce the bug with scene file or images if necessary.
Giving us info on your graphics card and driver is also helpful, especially if the bug you're logging is a display or OpenGL related issue.
Posting to the forums is NOT how you should log bugs. They aren't tracked by Support or QA and there's no guarantee that anyone from SideFX will see it. Sometimes a SideFX person may be lurking in the forums and may even respond, but don't count on it. The forums are really for peer support and questions of other users. We have a great bunch of really helpful and knowledgeable users out there and they may help you out, but if you have an issue that needs attention from someone at SideFX, posting it in the forums is definitely not the way to go about it. If you have a BUG or an RFE, you should use option 1, 2, or 3 to let us know.
Thanks for your co-operation!

hi, the new h12 flip solver contains many microSolver with use openCL off by default without providing an option on flipSolverDop to enable it. Does it comes with any insight not to use it??
thank you
Check this out:

Here's the relevant bit of info:
GPU Acceleration and OpenCL
“On certain graphics cards, Houdini can use the GPU to dramatically increase the performance and speed of your Pyro FX simulations. Pyro FX is currently the only area of Houdini that uses GPU acceleration via OpenCL but it may be expanded to other areas in the future.”

*NOTE* Things have changed a bit since these videos were made by Mario Marengo but they are still an excellent source of information on the inner workings of Pyro FX 2.
