I also only use an air cooler but I have a bunch of friends that bought either H60 or H80 from the Corsair Hydro series and are very happy with them.
On the overclocking being a too expensive hobby you should reconsider. At least if you buy the i7 ****K series you can get a lot of extra performance. It's no problem running a 2600K at 4.4 GHz where the stock is only 3.4GHz.

Save yourself from damaging some very expensive parts and hire a professional to build your machine.

This sounds like solid advice.

Simulate more particles or higher resolution volumes and you will use more ram.
All simulations aren't 100% threaded and therefor can not use 100% of all cores of your cpu.
On the becoming 90 degrees and beeping. That is not normal. You should make sure your heatsink is mounted correctly.

Most importantly, research like a maniac that the laptop can actually handle the heat from full load temperatures. I have had way too much problems with overheating laptops.

3930K is 1.65 times more expensive where I am at and it also leads to more expensive motherboard.
So if its pure performance/price the 2600K is still better. But if you got the extra cash the 3930K is of course better.

RAM question: Where does an extra 2x8gb comes in (simulation, interface interactivity)? I'm using a 2600k@4.5ghz. I may also need to upgrade to windows pro so insights would really help. Thank you!
With more RAM you can simulate and render higher resolution grids for volume simulations and higher amounts of particles for example.

Any other help? I'm not sure what you mean by updating drivers for DirectX library. Does Houdini rely on some DirectX libraries?
Houdini don't use directx so you don't need to update that. Unfortunately i do not know why it's crashing but it sure ain't directx.

A lot of digital tutors stuff is outdated. It can be activated somehow but i don't remember how and don't recommend it. It's better to work with what is current.

Your drivers seems to be very old. I think updating them would be a nice idea. There should in theory be nothing stopping you from running H12 with the 2.1 viewport enabled.
Other than that I take all chances at getting people away from Windows so you could try slapping some Linux distribution on it.

More is always better. It seems the price of the 8GB modules are pretty much free-falling atm tho. A month ago 4x8GB was around 3000 SEK in Sweden and now it's down to 2200 SEK.

If the speed was good enough with MEL it will probably be faster with python.
I would not use the print vex node for this.

Digging up this old thread.
Is there anyway to avoid popup interfaces when using PyQt?
Through some neat docking or actually implementing a custom pane?
Slightly off-topic another solution could be if there is somehow to use a custom web-site that can be browsed through the help browser to launch python code in a similar fashion that example files can be launched or loaded?

It works fine if you use it correctly.
To print it in python shell:
print hou.parm(“/obj/A/shop_materialpath”).eval()

I was fairly certain that kind of stuff had to be added to a Properties node inside of the shader but I just tried that and it didn't work either so I am also curious on how that should be setup.

I wen't with a GTX 550 Ti and a i7 2600K.
It was only about 40$ between the GTX 550 and then GT 440 so it seemed worth it to get GDDR5 memory instead of DDR3.
