I am having the similar license problems.
I purchased Houdini HD Apprentice and then purchased Houdini Master, after evaluating Apprentice. Errors popped up, when I just had Houdini HD Apprentice. Errors still pop up with Master.
I modified the window firewall to specifically allow all mantra and Houdini processes. I am using webroot anywhere always security. I allow mantra and Houdini in it's firewall.
I have had issues with using the license manager. I used the website to redeem my licenses and the local license server did not update the licenses. I manually cut and pasted the master license text and "Houdini-Master 13.0 was added to the Installed License list. I am confused by the listings. My listing looks like the one that you said looked like pirated code. But this is not pirated.
Houdin-Master 13.0 Available 0/1
I included a screen shot.
Perhaps I made a mistake in redeeming the licenses. Perhaps there is some confusion between the Apprentice license and the Master license. Should I remove the Apprentice, since I don't need it on this machine?
This is the error I got when I tried to load an image for an environmental light

No licenses could be found to run this application.
Please note, starting with Houdini 12.1, the main product is called Houdini FX (houdinifx).
You may be trying to run Houdini (houdini) formerly known as Houdini Escape (hescape),
which requires a separate Houdini-Escape license that may be missing.
You can try launching Houdini FX, instead.
Please check for a valid license server host

This is my first Houdini project, done with Apprentice HD 12.5. I was on a tight schedule and learning Houdini at the same time. I am not happy with the lighting and I wanted to do something with temperature radiation and illumination. I think the wake (cloud) looks good.
The latest issue of Nature Magazine (Nov7th?), chose it for their cover, which in the world of science is a big deal.
This is a simulation of the Chelyabinsk meteor that exploded over Siberia in February. The wake (cloud material) was simulated on Sandia's Redsky super computer by Mark Boslough. This individual time step had 129,000,000 data points. We simulated over 200 steps. The simulation data for the image was done at 60 seconds after the meteor impact.

Probably better offline, but your right, it's like an Oscar and VFX people wouldn't typically understand that. Nature also did a video and are doing a blog story about how it was created. Very cool. I wasn't an author. I got involved after the article was submitted.
I should have a full license of Houdini FX today. It may have been purchased for me already.
The image was not nearly as good as I wanted, but Houdini has a steep learning curve. I would have like to create better lighting and added some real temperature data and use that to color and illuminate the wake. I figured out how to get import temperature data (ev) and use a ramp to translate electron volts to color. I ran out of time getting those colors to properly illuminate the cloud material.

Off topic question for ndickson.
I am new to Houdini. I will be purchasing Houdini FX in the next few days. I used Apprentice HD to create the cover for the latest issue of Nature Magazine, my first project with Houdini. The embargo was lifted today, so I can talk about it. Should I post the cover on the forum? Where? I thought that Side Effects and Houdini users might like to see it.
Just saw the image in preview. I need to color correct it for viewing on a screen. The gamma is set for print. I will get the version that they added text to on Monday.

I checked the stl format specification.
ASCII STL files start with text “solid” plus a name, on the first line.
solid name
Binary STL starts with 80 character header, which is rarely used, but should never contain solid.
UINT8 – Header
UINT32 – Number of triangles
If first line contains text = solid, then it's binary
else it is ascii

Renaming stl to bstl works!!!!
My stl files are typically very large. Many times they are well over a Gbyte. So, I only use binary stl files. I changed the extension from stl to bstl and everything worked.

Can't load stl files in Houdini. STL is listed as one of the object import types, but it does not work.
I exported an object from meshlab in obj and stl format. Houdini loads the obj file but I get an error when I try to load the stl version. “Unable to read file …”. I was hoping this might work in Houdini 13.
Has anyone loaded an stl file?
Brad

Thanks.
When I hit render on the render view, the console opens and is in front and I see lots of rendering messages. When I hit render in the Mantra properties, I did not see a console window. Now that I am getting the info I need in the console, I will do some experiments to determine if there is an issue with where I render.
I noticed that even with the verbose setting, the Scheduler View shows “Manta” as the command. I would expect the command to be “Manta -V or Va”, but I guess they just list the command without any arguments.

I am rendering a single frame that may take a day or more to render. I can't get any progress information. Under Manta statistics I select the highest level of verbose and I select the Alfred style of progress. When I render and watch the scheduling view, I only see elapsed time.
I also tried a simple cube with a cloud rig, but I only see elapsed time, until it's finished.

I added a point sop between the tableimport sop and the add sop. I then changed the scale to “add scale”. I had to enter a value of 8000 to make the points in my point cloud visible. So, I can add a pscale attribute to a point and then adjust it's size.
Now I need to figure out how to scale the sprite based materials.

I have a couple million points that I used a TableImport SOP to read from a CSV file. I added position attributes, Px, Py, Pz. I can see the points in the scene view. The points are spread across about 24 miles. Even with a lot of points, the points are far apart.
If I add a material, like Sprite Fog and render a frame. The render will only take a few seconds and be completely black.
If I manually edit the CSV file and create a few points, with Px, Py, Pz within a meter of each other, the points render. I load the simple CSV file and move the camera to center on the new points. The points render as small blobs a meter apart.
I assume the CVS file with lots of points, that are very far apart, are not being rendered, because the rendered points are too small to be scene.
I don't know how to size the points. For example, in the simple example, I should be able to create a cloud like rendering, instead of small puffs of clouds.
Any suggestions?

Technical Discussion » Render Fails Command Exit Code: 255

Mantra render randomly quits with a “Error: Command Exit Code: 255”. I recently, purchased an apprentice HD license.
The error does not occur on a specific frame or with specific scenes. It can fail after 20 minutes or after 2 hours. If I render the same scene from the beginning, it will fail on a different frame.
Is there a list of what the different exit codes mean?
