Technical Discussion » How to unwrap (linearize) render depenedancy tree?

Do you mean the nodes directly connected to your Rop node of interest? If you want the first-level dependencies, couldn't you just also run RopNode.inputs() and check that each node in inputDependencies() is also in that list?

Have you looked into Conda?
https://conda.io/en/latest/ [conda.io]
https://www.anaconda.com/distribution/ [www.anaconda.com]
Granted, I've only tested it with Linux, but perhaps there are similar builds out there in the user channels.

What “transform” space do packed prims inherit in a shading context? Is it the local packed transform or the parent object's?
Thanks,

This has always bugged me…
How can I render with two environment lights and have them both visible in the final image? One always seems to overlap the other and the alpha is white…
Using 17.0.352.
Cheers,
Jon

I see all sorts of scripts and files for USD in the Houdini install folder but no USD nodes in the interface. Am I missing something on how to enable it?
This is with an Education license.
Thanks,

AMNH in NYC is looking for a TD to fill a year long spot on our next planetarium production. See details here:
https://careers.amnh.org/postings/1718 [careers.amnh.org]
We're also potentially looking for a few modelers and Maya/Houdini lookdev artists to help develop spacecraft models and planetary elements over the course of production, and a Nuke compositor later in the summer.
Staff position is on-site, and freelance gigs are preferred on-site but we could work remotely with the right person.
Our shows are regularly considered among the best in the field and emphasize accuracy and making cutting edge scientific data visualization accessible to a general audience. Two examples of previous shows:
https://www.amnh.org/exhibitions/space-show/dark-universe [www.amnh.org]
https://www.amnh.org/global-business-development/planetarium-content/passport-to-the-universe [www.amnh.org]
This is a very small commercial size team working on a medium length production with a reasonable schedule, which could be a nice change of pace from either commercials or film, depending on which way you look at it. The content is typically pretty technical and substance always wins over style here. The TDs often end up doing a wide range of work from camera layout, to FX, to graphics programming and Python scripting. And for you Houdini nerds, Houdini is our core production package for most content creation and rendering.
Email Gavin Guerra (gguerra@amnh.org) or me at my AMNH email (jpparker@amnh.org) for more info.

After some gnashing of teeth, the solution is simple…. so far. Not everything is tested yet… Ignore the other variables above and set LD_PRELOAD:
export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/local/anaconda2-5.1.0/lib/libpython2.7.so.1.0

Is there a good solution to using Python virtual environments now with Houdini? We are using conda (anaconda.com), which is a great way to manage custom environments.
HOUDINI_PYTHON_BIN and HOUDINI_PYTHON_LIB are no longer used… according to the help, the new solution is to use PYTHONHOME/LD_LIBRARY_PATH. But these are discouraged by the conda documentation itself. (And LD_LIBRARY_PATH is also discouraged, in general…)
First pass at this gives me the following error:
I've filed a bug already…

Use the “sun” light mode instead of distant. Then you have an angle control to set how soft the shadows are.

+1 to wanting to know exactly how to reproduce those attributes.
Pixar's point cloud baking is a lot more straightforward… I always wondered if Side Effects' point cloud tools were more opaque due to patent constraints by Pixar.

Back in Houdini 9 or 10 (or later), I seem to remember the volumesample functions had a filter parameter. Whatever happened to it?
Do I really have to make my own filter function in VEX? Some other way?

FWIW, the only time I have actually noticed RAM speed being the limiting performance issue, in any application, is when clearing massive RAM caches in Houdini.

Sounds like a good approach to Houdini / CG related questions. What would be even cooler is if some kind soul out there created a general Stack Overflow for VFX / DCC / 3D.

Also, I haven't tested it thoroughly (but have used it…), doesn't multiplying a bsdf by zero set its probability of sampling to zero, hence no sampling occurs?

Another benefit to IFD files is memory usage… mantra and Houdini have separate copies of geometry in memory, even when running in hbatch.
