It is easier to assign materials at the object level so one approach is to have different objects for different material assignments. Materials can be assigned at the geometry level but this adds material strings to the geometry which add s lots of data to the geo.
If you want to organize your objects you can use subnetworks which act as folders for objects. You can also make digital assets out of these subnetworks. For instance if you are using a window-type many times on your building then you can turn it into an asset, position it around the building then if you want to edit how your windows look you only have to do edit the asset once and all the other windows will be updated.

Houdini Learning Materials » Where is the 'Mantra Surface' and 'VOP VEX surface SHOP'?

A VOP VEX surface shop has actually been renamed “Material Shader Builder” or “vopmaterial.” You can get this by going to the shop context in the network view and pressing tab>Material>Material Shader Builder. This is basically an empty vop network with some of the default gobals and outputs ready to go. To make this into a material you would need to do a number of things:
1) Wire in a Surface Model vop - this gives you your shading properties.
2) Add any parameter nodes, texture maps or other nodes to set up how the shader works
3) Add opengl parameters to the shop itself and organize the whole UI using the type properties panel.
A faster option is to go to the material palette, drag a Mantra Surface material into your scene and all of this work has been done for you. This is a generalized material which will cover many of your needs. If not then you can extend the material's functionality by editing how its network works.
Another option is to drag a Surface Model material into your scene. It has a much simpler VOP network (only a surface model node and some parameter nodes) in case you want to build up a material yourself - this is closer to the vopmaterial approach but saves you time because the opengl parameters and the surface model vop are in place.

Jeff Wagner's old school blog has now been incorporated into the tutorial section. There is no longer a Learning > Old School Blog menu item. To find the lessons, go to Learning > Tutorials and click on "TD Workshop " in the sidebar menu.
This change was to ensure that all tutorials and lessons can be found in one location.

it is ok. i will email them but some of them have probably already read this topic and said nothing so my guess is there is no way. but i will email them anyway.
We moved the videos from the main website to Vimeo because tutorial file sizes were exploding and impacting day-to-day sidefx.com traffic. Vimeo allows us to keep sidefx.com downloads focused on daily builds and apprentice versions and Vimeo on tutorials and videos. Youtube has limits that have prevented us from using it for longer videos but those might be lifting at some point (mainly length and file size).
We know that there are other places in the world where this is an issue but don't have an easy answer. You concern has been noted and we will continue to look for new ways to offer the lessons. Is there a list somewhere of all the services blocked in your country?

The first year of the annual upgrade plan is included with all new Houdini or Houdini FX licenses including the floating licenses.

It is the same software. The difference is that you would use a different license which would remove any Apprentice restrictions (render size, hipnc file format…)

I believe it is this webinar training class:
http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2215&Itemid=215 [sidefx.com]
The training happened at 12-1 EST yesterday. We will put a recording of it up at some point but the actual event was set up to happen in real time between 12 and 1. Is that when you tried to join in? Maybe there is another issue.

The new prices seem to be node locked licenses, I saw no mention of floating license prices anywhere?
You can get the floating license prices from your account rep or by contacting sales@sidefx.com. The savings for those licenses are about the same as node-locked percentage-wise.
