How many threads have you consumed with this same question? This is the third, right?

C'mon. Now this seems like trolling.

Not a preferred in terms of ‘whats best for Houdini’, not really. I've heard Syntheyes works great, we use pftrack and 3DEqualizer. Occasionally you'll got odd little hiccups in the exporters from some companies but it's rarely anything you can't hack around very quickly.

I would base your choice on the ease/quality/value of the tracking software to make that decision. Just verify with them they support Houdini in some form(there's now also FBX importing).

Cheers,

J.C.

Top of this page/Support/Houdini Documentation. On the upper right, enter ‘write out files to disk’. You get this right at the top:

http://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini10.0/io/geo [sidefx.com]

Hand holding someone through every task isn't as much fun as watching someone use the existing docs and figure it out for themselves…

I've got to be honest, I'm not even feeling particularly optimistic about the last in the series, either…

No need to uninstall, just install the new versions, it will create a new start menu item and keep your old prefs. You can safely uninstall the old versions anytime. Just be sure to not constantly reinstall the license server - that would only be done once.

Take Keyframe's word for it…he's not casually suggesting you might want more RAM later - you *need* more just to get started. And simming? That's another completely different ballpark. Just to use Houdini in something approximating production, you'll want 8G(although I'm finding 12G is more comfortable with each passing day). If you want to do any serious simming, 12G is an absolute minimum.

I understand that circumstances and/or money can drive things, but really, seriously, you *need* more than 2G. You'll just get frustrated and you won't be able to get anything done. It's just a reality of the software demands.

Cheers,

J.C.

Well, I'm afraid linux distros are sort of like platforms in general, tend to attract fervent hatred or passionate attachment. I think SUSE 11.2 is wonderful, yeah, it's absolutely worth a shot if you're not married to any particular distro yet. It's got a great KDE integration, plus they're wired firefox 3.5 quite tidily into the desktop(you can safely avoid 3 or 4 different browsers unlike most linux installs). Additionally, it ships with a workstation kernel now, tuned for the desktop. The standard kernel is still there too, of course.

Cheers,

J.C.

I'm running the latest and greatest Houdini, and we upgrade frequently. SESI is very generous when it comes to Linux distro support. Technically, yes, they have an official list of supported distros(which is still *very* large by any standards), but they want Houdini to work in most of the more popular ones. They try their best to iron out issues(such as the ones in this thread with Unbuntu) because they realize that inevitably they'll need to deal with it anyway, better earlier than later.

Of course, sometimes ‘stuff happens’ and they'll reluctantly need to put some issues on the back burner for a time, then they'll have to fall back to the official list. However, I've been running ‘unsupported’ distros almost since Houdini was ported to Linux. I would use the experiences of others, from threads like this, to help warn of problems.

Cheers,

J.C.

Wren: I've been running SUSE 11.2 since the day after release, it works a charm. No issues at all so far, and KDE4 implementation is awesome(as opposed to SUSE 11.1/KDE4, which was unusable).

Cheers,

Thanks for the update, Chris. At the risk of a make-work question(heaven forbid! ), what sorts of libraries are you having trouble with? I'm not an Ubuntu user but I've definitely seen cases where it's the canary in the coal mine for some other distros. We're running SUSE 11.1 here(no problems) but I was thinking of going 11.2 perhaps over the holidays, so I can keep an eye peeled for trouble spots.

Cheers,

J.C.

You shouldn't. It's always bugged me there's a handful of options(that have fairly impactful effects!) that are sitting there in that menu and aren't consolidated in the preferences. I suppose an argument could be made for having some of those there(you may want them on or off occasionally), but help on startup ain't one of them in my books, and at least reproducing them in preferences would be helpful.

Cheers,

If I follow you, you don't need them. The alpha is there, you don't need another one, the existing one will work fine.

I should point out that AFAIK the PBR exports don't currently have a mechanism to deal with shadows.

Splitting up a render for multiple hosts adds overhead. I can't speak to the amount of overhead and it's impact on final render times, there's a lot of variables that can effect that that are local, such as infrastructure, what you're rendering, etc. Twice as long seems high to me, but not if you're talking about a trivial render. Splitting out over the network tends to be useful for more intense renders.

Yeah, haxorz your shadows, you're raytracing them there, that's what's killing you. A shadow map instead and it renders much faster.

I think the point was your question was too generic, you're effectively asking for a brand new tutorial somehow customized to your environment, which btw you've offered up no information about.

Better is to indicate what you're running on, what you tried to do, and where things seemed to fail. ‘Not seeing anything’ doesn't really explain anything. Pages would be spent asking you questions and waiting for answers.

Cheers,

J.C.
