I get that it's probably a deceivingly tricky thing to achieve due to the nature of Houdini but, maybe they could do it by allowing you to multi select a few edit nodes and edit them at once?
This is something I always come across while modelling in Houdini, and I really enjoy modelling in Houdini. It would be great to get a fix. It's one of those things that you shouldn't have to think about so hard, but you end up having to fully plan doing the tiniest of edits.

Hey nice one! Getting animation across there can be really tricky but once you’ve got it working it’s pretty cool.

Hey @moferad, I have a workaround.
I export the skinned character as a single frame first. Then export just bones without the skinned mesh to be used as animation clips in Unity.
I hope that makes sense. It’s not ideal but not that bad once you get it set up.
The problem apparently comes from Houdini thinking the mesh has point animation on it. So it bakes the mesh out to a cache and removes the skin.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Bright seams on bake with gamma shift

Hi all!
Just messing around with baking textures and I’m getting some annoying issues. I’m getting bright edges around the seams in my model. It only happens when I boost the gamma to 2.2 which I think I have to do to make it look correct in Sketchfab.
Here’s the model, the seams are most noticeable on the joysticks.
Arcade Model… [skfb.ly]
Any ideas what’s going wrong there?
Thanks,
Pete

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Trying to access the HDAModule from a Select Script

I'm trying to access a function in a HDAModule from a select script but I'm a bit stuck. I can get this to work as a toolbar script but I'm a bit stuck trying to get it to work as an object's Select Script.
I'd also like to pass the selected node, normally I'd do that with kwargs from the HDA but I'm not sure how that would work here.
The manual says it's interpreted as HScript so that could make it tricky.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Pete
node_type = hou.nodeType(hou.objNodeTypeCategory(), "Hand") node_type.hdaModule().test()

Hi there,
I was trying to write a script to select an object then activate a specific transform handle/mode (Rotation, set to local), but I can't seem to find a way to access the transform handles through scripting.
Can someone point me in the right direction there?
Thanks!
Pete

Hi there,
Just wondering if anyone has managed to get tangent data from Houdini to Unity in an FBX?
I've tried naming the attribute so many variations and types but I can't seem to get it to work.
Thanks,
Pete

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Selecting joints for animation (Keeps selecting the wrong bone) :(

Hi there,
This is an issue I deal with every time I'm animating in Houdini and it's super frustrating so I thought I'd ask here if there might be a solution.
When I go to select a particular finger joint (or any other bone but fingers are the main culprit), Houdini will often select a bone that is behind the one I'm try to select, or both bones. It's really annoying and it means I often have to spin the camera around as I select so there's no possible way another bone can be in line with my selection.
I was trying to narrow down what might be causing it and clipping doesn't seem to have an effect, but if I activate object selection and move across the object you can see the flakiness of what Houdini thinks it should be selecting.
It might sound like like a stupid thing but when you are animating all day and having to wizz the camera around like a fool just to select things it gets pretty annoying and I want to love animating in Houdini
Thanks,
Pete

Awesome tamte!
Interesting that it was added a while ago to fix little render artifacts. http://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini/news/15/rendering.html [www.sidefx.com]
I've never used render properties before, so thanks!

Hi All,
I'm trying to render out some game models I'm working on and I'm running into issues with shadows. It seems my normals are affecting the shadows in the render.
Here's the character's head in the viewport -
Then the render turns out like this -
But then if I add a normal node and set the cusp angle to zero, I get this -
Is there a way to get shadows like that last image but with my existing normals?
Thanks,
Pete

Thanks @dlee!
The Disable Lighting/Emission was the one that was tripping me up
I'm still having a bit of trouble with the actual file export though. I set it to rat and added an extra plane but it doesn't seem to write out a usable file.
If you have a sec, I updated the file.
Thanks!
Pete

Hi there,
I was just trying to get my head around bake texture and having a bit of trouble.
So I have an object in my scene that is rendering like this.
Then the bake renders white,
I'm just trying to render the lighting for this one object so I've left the other objects blank
Could that be causing the issues?
Thanks!
Pete

Hi there,
I'm having the same problem in osx, I can't find that temp directory for the life of me.
This is what I get on the popup - Fatal Error: data saved to /tmp/houdini_temp/crash.Turnaround.Pete_3520.hiplc
If I put that into Textport I get this -
/ -> echo $HOUDINI_TEMP_DIR/
/tmp/houdini_temp/
/ ->
Any ideas where that might be going?
Thanks,
Pete

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Changing Houdini Scale

Hi All,
I'm tempted to change my Houdini scene scale…
I know this is a topic that makes people angry and rightly so, I've dealt with different scene scales and it can become a nightmare really easily.
The problem is, I'm always modelling things that are easily within 1 metre, and 90% of the time I'm on the lowest end of the parameter ladder as standard, the grid is way to big and everything just feels like it's out of whack.
So if I changed it to one unit = 1 cm, what sort of things will it break? How do other people deal with this?
Thanks,
Pete

Hey thanks jsmack! That works great.
It's strange but I can't get anything working in that dedicated bump section, it even looks like it has an effect value that should work.
Anyway, your solution is working great so I'll just stick with that.
Thanks!
Pete
