Houdini Lounge » Houdini in 32-bit for mac?

There are no plans to bring out a 32-bit version of Houdini on the Mac. Our development right from the beginning was focused on 64-bit Intel processors and we are moving forward with that.

The account is back up and running. All H10 testers are sharing the same account and someone tried to change the password which put the account in limbo. It is back now.

For this release the planned release is in April with a closed beta until then. Apprentice HD does give you access the beta but we will not be opening it up to the wider Apprentice community this time around. The main reason for this is that we would like to keep our new features under non-disclosure until the actual release date.

Yes - If you buy Apprentice HD right now then you are getting a H10 license that will let you participate in the beta now and will work with H10 when it goes gold.
Thanks for the suggestion on the dot node. It was considered but didn't make it into this release. On the other hand there are some nice enhancements to the network editor UI.

Houdini Lounge » Union Boolean for each copied instance? [SOLVED]

In this particular example I wouldn't rely on a boolean. Since you know the angle of rotation when you set up the copied rings, it is better to clip the rings at the proper rotation angle so that they match up perfectly.
Attached is a file with a torus set up to handle any number of rings you need. I have promoted a “# rings” parameter which you can work with at the object level. down below you can see a single ring cut using two clip sops then rotated and copied using a copy sop. The Number of rings drives the angle of the copy and also rotates a couple of simple lines. The end points of the lines are used to define the Direction of each clip. At the end the parts are fused to make them one surface.
Overall this solution is a lot more reliable than then boolean node (cookie) and you can set up as many rings as you need.

Please note that Houdini supports 64-bit Dual Core Intel Macs. There are some first generation 32-bit Intel Macs that we do not support.

The documentation what's new list is a partial list that is focused on things that have been documented. For a more complete list, use the same login you used to download the beta software then go to the Houdini 10 Early Access forum. The Welcome posting includes a more comprehensive list.

For now we have supplied HD users with a H10 license for testing that does not require an upgrade. This license will expire after the beta and you can continue working with your 9.5 Apprentice HD. When Houdini 10 goes gold then we will establish the upgrade policy and determine what is the appropriate grace period.

Customers who are part of the AUP program and Apprentice HD customers have been invited to participate in the Houdini 10 early access beta. This is a closed beta and we will not be publicly announcing the features in H10 until a later date. This is a great release and we are looking forward to coming out with a bang.
All testers should submit issues logging in with the same beta account you used to download H10 then add comments to the Early Access forum which will appear after logging in. Please DO NOT post issues to the open forums using your regular login.

You can hold a selection in a group node (I noticed that bioforce is asking about his in another thread) and that group can then be used as the selection in future nodes. There are procedural ways of generating groups or you can create the group from a hand-picked selection. One limitation is that only face and point selections can be set up as groups and any edge selection is converted to points. Edge groups is a request we are aware of but is not available at the moment.
If you want to create an edge loop cut then you can use the Polysplit tool. click once on the edge you want to cut then press Enter. Go to the parameter pane and set Path Type to Quad Strip and the choose Close Path. This will give you and edge loop cut.

The selection loops use the hotkeys available in the RMB-menu found when you are either in the handle tool or the select tool. These are devices used for speeding up the selection process and do not require a node. The nodes are placed down when you are acting on the selection.

have you checked out the spoon tutorial in the Apprentice Blog? It was designed to show you how you can set one node like the subdivide node as the display node then when you click back on an earlier node you can see the subdivided result but work on the mesh. You can select points and edit them, select faces and extrude them and perform other operations that get placed inbetween the selected node and the display node.

when I am working on a symmetrical character I set up a mirror, then a subdivide then jump back to the node before the mirror and work on the one half of the model - you can use the shelf or tab key and the nodes will get inserted for you.

Can I edit the keys on camera for tracking fix attempt?
Thank you!
You can make any edits you need inside Houdini.

1. Can I add this frames by myself?
2. If yes, can I retrack my new sequence by myself and use it in Houdini scene? (I didn't maid it before, so this could be a nice experience for me).
To keep everyone on the same footing, you should use the existing track and keep the footage at the same length or shorter.

I *DO* feel that as a software company, they have, on occassion, consulted (and in fact, continue to consult) their customers with regards to the direction they are taking – but it's important that credit is given where it is due. SESI is making the decisions at the end of the day. Not the users. In fact, I would imagine that had SESI done a less kick-ass job balancing a long-term vision with today customer demands, we'd have a lesser platform to work on today.
Thanks for the vote of confidence. The development team here is always looking for ways to advance CG to the next level. Luckily the Houdini community is a great partner in this process and user requests offer a great springboard for their ideas. We actually take suggestions and ideas from forums and other discussions to help determine priorities then balance that with available resources to figure out what enhancements are best for each release. But if a developer has a great idea that isn't even on anyone's radar we aren't afraid to go for it.
What always amazes me is how the sidefx developers never look for the quick fix to a user problem but always solve issues in the most general way possible to provide a long term solution that offers something to all users. And to see many of these things happen in daily builds always amazes me.
Robert
PS - Katie - be sure to email me with your questions. It is nice to see you explore this aspect of how software companies work. Side Effects has worked hard to think differently in this area and new users often miss this while they focus on the latest and greatest features.
PSS - We have a PDF document that outlines some of our options regarding support which you can find here:

Hope that helps.

Does the above clause mean even the compositing must be done in Houdini or can it be done in an external app, just clarifying.
Compositing can be done in another app but if you are using the free Houdini Apprentice then the watermark may get in your way. If you render in the free version to Houdini's .picnc format then you don't get a watermark on renderings and can composite them in Houdini without the mark. Only when you export to another format (quicktime etc…) will it get the watermark.

I assume as long as the focal piece is clearly identifiable as the supplied footage things would be ok.
Tinkering with the background or the sound clip are OK as long as Houdini is used to create and animate the main character/effect. Modeling outside Houdini is being allowed in case you want to work with a model you already have ready and want to put more focus on the idea.
