Does anyone know if Windows 10 will improve at all on RAM consumption? I really would rather not dive into Linux if I don't have to (too many other more artist related things to learn/spend time on); so an improvement with Windows' RAM usage during sims would be very appreciated…

A tack on question; has anyone tested jemalloc on Windows Houdini.

'Performance of tcmalloc/jemalloc over windows 7's system malloc'

Any thoughts on this from the devs? Is Houdini working well on the current build of Windows 10?

Yes, I've been running the tech preview for months. Don't expect any significant performance improvements over win8.1 or win7.

M$ is planning to focus on stability and performance after the W10 is shipped. Right now they wanted to finish it.

Yes it runs on Win10.
However I have horrible lags while working. I'm not sure it comes from Win10. The problem is… In the system requirement [sidefx.com] it says I need 4Gb of RAM, but I'm learning Houdini on an old laptop which has only 3 Gb of RAM, is this the cause of the slow interaction?
What I find strange is that it's only slow in geometry level… In object level, the interaction is perfectly normal.

… Softimage? Have you tried to uninstall it? Maybe this will help.

What is the GPU in the system? Have you tried upgrading the driver for it lately?

Geforce 9600 MS with the latest Nvidia Win10 drivers.
I told you it's an old rig!!
Note : same thing happens with a new cube in a new scene. Only happens in component works. Sometimes the lag will just disappear , even in component mode, then reappear.
Softimage is not affected by this lag, and no I won't uninstall it!! 8)

My guess is that the geometry shader is causing a slowdown with the wire-over-shaded rendering when you're in SOPs. You can try switching the shading mode to “Smooth Shaded” instead of Smooth Wire Shaded". The 9600M GS only has 32 shader cores which is pretty meagre by today's standards and likely why it's lagging in that case.

Hello Twod, thanks for the tip.
No improvement after switching to “Smooth Shaded”. I even tried to tumble around a sphere in bounding box display mode and still have the same problem!
Is my video card dying… ?
