non-hardened environment variables in IFDs? 8 years, 3 months
Is it possible for Houdini to *not* expand environment variables when writing to IFD? More generally, what options are there for dealing with relative paths when moving from one's local machine over to a render node? For a given project, I tend to create a directory tree with one or more .hip files in the root folder. Resources are then referenced as $HIP/shaders, $HIP/maps, etc. In the ROP, I'll then prepend my output filenames with $HIP/render/diff, $HIP/render/spec, etc. This works great on the local machine. However, writing to .ifd, the $HIP (or any other environment variable) gets expanded. My hack is to run a post-render script that does a search/replace of the hardened strings, converting them back to envvars. Of course this only works with ascii IFD. I'd be very interested in hearing how others deal with path issues ... Cheers, Darran. P.S. I've got a nagging suspicion that I asked a similar question on the list last year. Houdini Mental Ray 11 years, 5 months
Pardon my lack of energy to trawl through the docs, but I thought the list might be quicker.. Can anyone summarise how Mental Ray's setup with Houdini these days? Do you need to buy standalone licenses to render it on a farm, or are there built in licenses similar to MentalRay For Maya? Are there any plans to implement MentalRay VOPs? And where do you install MR shaders for Houdini? Currently I'm doing a heavy ray tracing job, a fluid explosion, MR's much faster at that kind of thing, but I've popped over to Maya for the rendering as I haven't got time to setup MR properly in Houdini, but next time... Passing Attributes To Point Instance 11 years, 5 months
HI...... I have asked this problem before, but didn't get any answer. I hope it gets noticed this time tough... U can find my previous post here.. http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_forum&Itemid=172&page=viewtopi... I have some points and a geometry to instance on to the points. Using point attributes, I can choose different geometries for instancing. By varying the normals of points I can rotate the final instanced objects. By changing the pscale attribute of points, I can scale the Instances randomely. I can also change shaders for each instance. But I want to have more control. If I add an attribute XYZ to my points, and suppose assign them some random value, I want to refer to this value in my instanced Geometry and change my geometry.(scale, rotate, extrude amount , switch number, etc ) how can i do that. I know that can be done using Mantra Procedural "Hscript Instance" and using otl option. But what If I want to use Renderman. How can I get the Instance Number inside m Instance Geometry???? Hi, I know this is becoming more and more of an issue, but what are people doing these days when it comes to buying new monitors, since no one makes CRTs anymore? I've heard the Apple Cine-whatchamacallit ones are good, (at least calibratable). Anyone else out there have any suggestions? render problem between H8 & H9 11 years, 5 months
Hello~ I installed to try Houdini 9 on my computer few days ago. After that I had a problem about mantra rendering on Houdini 8. The problem which I experienced is Rendering was taken t~o~o~ long time. The problem was fixed after I uninstalled H9. Does anyone fix this problem without uninstalling Houdini9?

hi, my friend and i was testing renderman in h9, seems we couldn't let renderman recognize the change of object shading rate, wondering if anybody has some tips on this one, thanks. and seems houdini can only let us change the shading rate on the object level. -- ---Beijing 2008---

You know you can copy multiple things at once using copy paste. Heya Larry, As Peter Bowmar (wisely) pointed out, the OPlibraries file in $HFS/houdini/ contains the following: #if !environment(HOUDINI_HIDE_OG) otls/OPlibShopOGL2.otl #endif otls/OPlibDriver.otl otls/OPlibShop.otl otls/OPlibObject.otl otls/OPlibCop2.otl otls/OPlibSop.otl #if !environment(HOUDINI_HIDE_RI) otls/OPlibShopRIB.otl #endif #if !environment(HOUDINI_HIDE_VM) otls/OPlibShopVMantra.otl #endif otls/OPlibChop.otl #if !environment(HOUDINI_HIDE_MI) otls/OPlibShopMI.otl #endif so setting those environment variables should hide the extra bits and pieces.
