That's what the "set shot" workflow is an answer to (in part -- we all know that pipelines don't end there). However, to be completely fair, "set shot" is a shell-centric view of the pipeline. There are other valid methods of obtaining the end-result. It's not inconceivable to have a UI where artists can launch their applications/files, and all the environment stuff is initialized on the click, rather than leaving a shell open -- in fact, this is how Temerity's pipeline works.
