Look forward to the MR shader tutorial with Houdini. Anyone here had any success bringing XSI character anim and camera into Houdini? Any even short suggestions, scripting organize, naming wise to get started? Hi Peter, No, I wouldn't say that I instigated it but I did talk to Rolf Herken and Thomas Driemeyer about it a while ago. They told me that I could use the mental images file format for it (the whole scene file grammar comes with the book - just use yacc or bison to automatically write a parser) and I argued that there has to be an open standard because I'm afraid to invest any time into a project where someone claims later to have a patent (on a file format or a data base structure). It wouldn't take aeons to write things like that but maybe it would take aeons of my time to deal with lawyers once I finished writing it :[ Anyway, we will see what happens. For the time being I still like to write my own exports from everything I could get my hands on to every renderer I think of being worth to have my own export. And with every new export (import) I get pretty much the idea how my data base (or file format) would look like ;) And for CAD you need a bit more than just geometry (and shaders) ... topology, neighborhood information, higher accuracy, ... Something more pragmatic and easier to implement as STEP or IGES or VDAFS converters. ... Ha, Ha, Blender ... I met Ton at SIGGRAPH again ... and decided to do a donation for his foundation [ http://www.blender3d.com ] ... I still like it ... he's living on a houseboat in A'dam now ... and he never gives up ... I like him ;) But I shut up now. This is the Houdini list ;P BTW I hope to finish my tutorial about Houdini and writing mental ray shaders (and integrate them into Houdini) this weekend. It will (hopefully) be on Seamus web page [ http://www.techimage.co.uk ] soon ... CU in the White Horse (or the George?) one day ... I remember our discussions aboutcreating a hub format which whould accept any package as input and could send data to any renderer (it would take many aeons to write this sucker, though!).
